I get what you're saying but, at the same time, having a dash-mountable GPS unit in everyone's pocket put "the knowledge" on deathwatch. Uber is a nightmare of a company, but that's not the reason why black cab drivers are under pressure.

I have not forgotten how many times (basically, every time) I tried to get a black cab to take me "south of the river" only to be told to f*** off. I also haven't forgotten the more recent experiences of having to pay 30 quid to go a couple of miles.

To put it in another way,it would be like employing an electrician to come to your house to do some work, and watch him read "do it yourself electrics" book as he 're wires your house.

Shout at me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the taxpayer subsidise all airlines, in that there's no duty on aviation fuel? There may not be VAT either (I honestly don't know). Although there is of course a tax on the 'customer' when buying a ticket.

My understanding of VAT may be a little rusty / out of date, but it used to be that it weas paid only by the end customer. Therefore, if you bought something - like avgas - and "sold" it on to a customer as part of the cost that made up their ticket, then you were allowed to collect back any VAT you paid on the purchase.

Can it tell you where the German welfare council is,or the penal reform society...get into most black cabs and just give the name and he's gone.
No putting the passenger's in danger constantly looking at the "gps" to make sure he's not getting lost.

Well you can't order an Uber until you have told them where you're going. So, in that regard, you do just get in and go.

As to the safety of the driver following his GPS, this is one of the problems with Uber as a company. I hate when the driver holds the phone in his hand or lap - it ought to be mounted on the dash at a minimum. I ding drivers on my rating if this happens, and explain exactly why in the comments.

Following a GPS isn't inherently dangerous if you do it right.

That is a terrible and inaccurate analogy.

No it's not,how long do you think it takes to complete the "knowledge".
Roughly the same amount of time it takes to become an electrian.

All this nonsense about because it's cheap, then you should expect cr@p service is a load of rubbish.

Ryanair, Easyjet and the likes charge for a service that once paid for should be provided no matter what. They have worked out what they need to charge to provide that advertised service, whilst making a profit.

O'Leary has taken the money and should either supply the service or just get out and let someone else have a go. There'll be plenty of takers.

And as for the snobbery, we all know what the budget airlines offer. It's basic get you from A to B with no frills. If you want a bit more comfort and pampering then book BA or Virgin.

It's his own fault his shocking treatment of pilots effectively working as part of a gig economy. He didn't get rotas wrong, all the pilots went to Norwegian Air who have much better t+c's.

A rare moment in capitalism where the boss gets what's deserved. Shame Joe Public comes off worst (as usual)

I agree & nothing wrong with what the pilots did. I had a similar experience when working in Crawley. A big SUV turned up & asked all of us Carpenters what we were earning he offered us an extra 1.50 an hour but we had to start on Monday (This was in the 80s when Maidenbower village was being built) the first guy wouldnt match the second guy so 90% of us jacked in & went and worked for the new guy.

An electrician's the primary job is wiring and stuff, for which he/she has been trained and licensed. An Uber driver's primary job is driving the car, for which he/she has been trained and licensed. That's the appropriate analogy.

Navigation for an Uber driver is provided by the app, so no navigation skills are required, which is kind of the point.
