I agree with most of this Hrolf.

The Stranglers and Elvis Costello songs are still playable whereas lets say... Xray Spex was never really music and sounds pathetic if you play it now.

This is my favourite punk song....

The Members - Sound of the Suburbs

I love the driving bass and rhythmic melody.

A good tune.

In the end when all the pretense, hype and musical snobbery is forgotten, all that matters is a good tune. If you are really lucky it might have some clever lyrics and good production as well.

The album itself is a complete pile of pretentious w***. Playing the same track over and over, using a different instrument occasionally, with a voice saying 'introducing, man-dough-lynn' does not equate to music greatness.

How did Viv get involved in this abomination?

The Bonzos were recording their final album at the Branson-owned Manor studios at the same time as (the then unknown) Oldfield was doing Tubular Bells. Someone had the bright idea that each instrument required its own introduction which Viv agreed to do as a favour to Oldfield. When the album went stratospheric, Branson refused to cut Viv in on the royalties as there'd been no written agreement beforehand, a particularly churlish act as Viv hit some serious financial skids a few years later.

The Tubular Bells sessions also yielded up Viv's massively pissed-up commentary on Oldfield's 'Hornpipe' which is an absolute masterpiece. Can't find it on YouTube, unfortunately, but I'm sure Mr Apollo can dig it out from somewhere.

I'll look out for that!

While I'm responding to Cucking's post, can I give an plug for that final Bonzo's album..."let's make up and be friendly"...includes two great take offs of the Beatles,on a par IMHO with anything Innes later did with the Rutles...

Fresh Wound and Don't Get Me Wrong.

I'll upload the mp3 of the Hornpipe when I get a moment.

Well Matthew - I admit to be still at this stage but I may give them a try as I start to mellow.

The other day I thought I'd give Supertramp a listen due to the amount of people on here who bang on about them. It was OK - but with a lot of this stuff it's about a time in your life and the music being a soundtrack. You'd give a new album 10 listens on the trot as it was either that or watch Songs of Praise.

Nowadays it's so easy to listen to a track or 2 on Spotify and then hop straight into something completely different.

You don't need an Attention Span these days.

I listened to Supertramp on the train this morning.

I wish I hadn't.
