You were correct.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Its a very narrow view though of gender. And its certainly not how society entirely defines gender either, that's more socialised behaviour. I don't think we're biologically predisposed towards certain values, roles, styles of dress, hair style, toys etc.

Jamie, have you ever nobbed a woman?

If so, did it involve you worrying about the 'dynamics' of intercourse for days and, after payment and pitifully short and unsatisfactory encounter, did you cry for about thirty minutes?

Well I know where I stand on the right to have children...

There is gender, as a biological occurrence, and gender as a socially constructed concept. The two are very different. The latter is much more dominant in our ideas of male and female differences, than the biological.

We are much more than simple slaves to our biological instincts and imperatives. Otherwise the roles of women and women's identity wouldn't have changed so much over the last 100 years.

Its odd that we've embraced the 'expansion' of what a woman can be, to include adopting many 'aspects associated in the past with male gender identity' but not the reverse.

That is a different matter. Behaviour and gender are not the same.Gender is fixed.
There are people who claim to be born in the wrong body but that is a separate issue.

No I have never 'nobbed' a woman. I have had sex, made love, f**ked and shagged someone, but I've never seen it as being entirely about my p**** being in a woman. Generally I find sex is much better when its focuses on the two or more people involved enjoying it as much as possible.

Sexuality is something to explore, enjoy and delight in.

Do you think there are non-physiological aspects to gender, outside of biological functionality though. Or are you discounting the psychological and sociological aspects of being a man or woman, experienced by the individual and groups in society?

The experience of being a woman and man, are more profoundly defined, expressed and experienced through social constructs than through physiological differences.

I would like to see a society in which the differences between men and women were purely about the physiological characteristics of gender. But that is definitely not the case.

That's rather different. People should not be restricted by gender if that is what you mean but that is a long way from "choosing" gender at school. However, one must consider the natural determination of male and female behaviour which is above and beyond social constructs. We still need to be mothers and fathers and part of the reason why our society is becoming so dysfunctional is people's self indulgence.
Sometimes selfish desires or ambitions have to come second. Self fulfillment is not always found when you are totally self centered.

Isn't having children selfish, unless you have achieved a stage in life where you can make those sacrifices, where you have tired of the pleasures of youth. Where late nights, and 'good times' have begun to lose their appeal, and where something of greater meaning beckons.

At the age of 45, I have now known many people who rushed towards family, marriage, kids long before they were really 'done playing' (as well as some who should never have gone down that path and some who really never lived because they made stupid decisions and lead miserable lives as a result).

I think far to many people rush from their youth before they are done with 'playing with life', and in doing so still desire or romanticise the 'toys' they have put aside. This, I think, in turn leads them to regret or even resentment, because they still have 'the animal' within them.

Not sure if any of this is relevant to the topic.

I think what I'm trying to get at, with the previous post, is that the only way we can overcome self indulgence and its desires, is to indulge those desires until they grow stale and lose their appeal.

I tried to settle down in my late 20s and it went wrong, because I wasn't done with the options of sexuality and wasn't ready to be with just one woman, even though I loved her. By my late 30s, I had burned out those desires to indulge, and wanted something more fulfilling, than just sexual encounters and adventures.

Why shouldn't children choose their gender, based on their feelings, rather than have it defined by their parent. As long as they can change it periodically, I see no problem at all with it.

But then it should be based also on children's perception of their gender, not a check list of acceptable terms. If they want to put their gender as Tiger Dragon, then that's fine with me also - as its their understanding of their gender that matters, not our preconceptions.

Jamie that's bollocks mate as you well know. it's clever bollocks but bollocks none the less.

You know how important it is for children to feel as though they belong to a certain group, and to have structure and routine especially at that age.

What do you think it would do to developing child if it had to search it's it soul every quarter to make sure it's not gay, bisexual, or straight. Then there's the obvious nettle that no one has grasped, of having to explain to a four year old what being gay is and all it's connotations.

Pure unadulterated liberal horse s***. Furthermore which ever pedo came up with idea should be ousted form office and placed on a register.

Structure and routine is achievable without enforcing gender images onto children.

Not quite what I am saying - what I am saying is that we enforce gender concepts onto children, from a young age, rather than just let them be whatever they want to be. Children don't need to be conditioned by parents into become boys or girls other than from a social pressure to conform to our own images of male and female, not any naturally defined ones.

The idea of gay, trans, hetro, etc shouldn't be relevant to a child, or they all should be relevant.

It no different really than raising your kid to be religious. We shouldn't raise out kids to emulate us and our ideas, but to foster their ownself and ideas.

Jamie, I struggle to believe what say. Portraying yourself as some sort of Rasputin figure is completely at odds with the fact that you spend at least two thirds of your life on here and probably more time on other boards.

Chicks don't dig that way of life.
