"It was meant to be a peaceful protest but the police came with horses, meat wagons and helicopters"

This is the sort of mentality we're dealing with.

Doesn't actually seem that there was a lot of trouble though, three arrests and three policemen injured. Not even a Friday night in town.

Because nowadays arresting people is against their civil liberties / human rights / right to protest etc.

The hands off approach adopted in recent years has failed miserably

I thought they were supposed to be 'pro democracy' but you'd be excused for not knowing what their point is when they don't have a clue.

Reading the website I really struggle to make sense of it. It seems to surround revolt and upsetting the system I can only presume for the sake of anarchy's as there's no reference to a better system.

It really annoys me when everyone has their own justification for behaving like a cnut and cumulatively manage to legitimise it on the grounds of everything the government has done from Iraq to 'raping' dead pigs. Then you've got the alleged police cover-ups of 70s abuse making them fair game too.

This seems to be the format for most protests going back to the 2011 riots. Any excuse. I'd guess the end goal is to undermine the police further by provoking a heavy-handed response. This obviously mobilises more protesters and validates any ideas of oppression.

The media seems to be another focus but that goes back to anti capitalism and Murdoch owning x% of outlets. It's ironic that we've never had more choice of source than we've had now.

There's too much self righteous bulls*** where hating anyone with money or power is seen as honourable. Most the time it's about as senseless as blaming immigrants for everything.

As one the board's default left wingers, can I say that I couldn't agree with you more. Inarticulate anger serves very little purpose and that website is as inarticulate as they come.

The left is sorely in need of new ideas, weighed down as it by unimaginative (if not entirely wrong) Corbyn-like regurgitations on one extreme to kindergarten anarchists like this on the other. The failure of the left has not been entirely ideological but rather it has been a failure to develop a viable alternative form of social democracy since the discrediting of Marxism as a viable basis for a system of government (at least taken literally).

Until the left generates some serious, innovative thought I am afraid that opposition is left in the hands of idiots who offer little but disruption for the sake of it. If those of us on the left aren't prepared to call a spade a digging implement then we're part of the problem, not the solution.

Any protest against the current system is to be applauded.
That's unless you enjoy the current system and all that it stands for?

Time to move forward together.

I find this an unusual view in the general context of the present moment. Corbyn has reinvigorated a huge element of British public opinion and continues to close the gap on the Tories in the opinion polls, projecting what is if not in substance at least in symbolism a form of radical socialism that is a complete departure from the Blairite third way project.

Of course I have to also point out that if you feel Marxism has been discredited because of 20th century attempts at pursuing it, then you clearly haven't read any Marx, which was as strictly anti-authoritarian as it was egalitarian, speaking more about liberating workers from long hour wage labour and providing a social means by which we could feel more free to act as we pleased without concern for our material wellbeing. But that's another thread entirely.

As for the protest, live and let live, it's mainly symbolic anyway, and stop getting so offended if some kids chase down a sports car, that sh*t happens all the time.

As soon as these people break off from their "protest" and start attacking those who they consider to be better off or more wealthy, it demonstrates how thin the line is between (self) righteous indignation and simple jealousy.

Some aspects of capitalism are indeed distasteful, but just cast your eye round the modern world and consider the alternatives.

Must be really comfortable waking up every morning, reading whatever your rag of choice is and going "yep, that's 100% my opinion. Glad I don't have to look in to this any further as all the information I need is right here" and carrying that around with you all day.

So what justifies it? I'm all for protesting and marching for what you believe in.

Act like a thug and don't be surprised if people take exception.

How do you think the person in the car felt? flashing lights (probably very difficult to see) and surrounded by masked protagonists who were tring to stop them form leaving?

Go on justify what they were doing

It was a small minority, and on top of that some were goaded to a ridiculous degree. You've never seen an over zealous steward, constantly provoking and provoking and then when they get a reaction, call in all their buddies for help? Justifying; no. But lets give it a fair analysis no?

And again I bring you back to the football comparative, how did you feel being tarred with the "football hooligan" brush? You know it happens, the pictures in the papers are damning, how do you defend yourself?

There were a lot of football 'hooligans' turning up at the printers strike and poll tax demo, the miners strike. Id say there's a few agitators at these anti capitslist demo's but most of them look like students.

The other focus of the protest seems to be 'class war'.

When did everyone start to care so much about 'the poor'? When they had someone to blame for it rather than actually doing something to help, that's when.

Makes me grateful for the Facebook friends who are poor and just get on with it even if they are on the dole.

When I was about 16 I think, seemed unfair that some people worked hard all their life and got next to nothing in return.

Did you ever take a step back and look at why you weren't one of them?

If you've got a nice car they'll try to smash it but blame everyone else for being poor.

Have any of these idiots ever looked up to anyone who's done well? Even the likes of Lord Sugar are scum to them.

I saw some 2-bob comedian's quote suggesting that doleites contribute the most because all their money goes towards the tax on fags and booze.

Overall the message stinks and says "why bother?".

I think the comedian in question was making a point that they ended up paying more tax than Amazon did, it was a joke.
