That Corbyn, who has very little financial or organisational network around him, is doing so well speaks volumes for how stupid and out of touch with reality Labour supporters and Unions are....

EFA

You've gotta say though, given the growing support of Bernie Sanders in the US, who has 10s of thousands coming to his rallies and is rapidly gaining on Hilary for the Democratic nomination, it would appear that socialist-influenced politics is striking a chord with a lot of people on both sides of the pond, is it not?

I am not that interested in US politics personally.

Over here we've just had a General Election if you recall and socialism was given a huge thumbs down.

However, if it makes you feel better and able to cope with a Conservative government for the next 5 years you think what you like sunbeam.

You are wrong. The Labour party's policy can best be described as 'Conservative light' or possibly 'a huge mess', and this was what was given the thumbs down. It was a lack of alternative to the current political direction that sunk them.

I was talking about the tossers that campaigned as "The Trade Union and Socialist Coalition"... did they get their deposit back on any seat?

Labour were just pathetic that was what "sank them".

They lost their deposit in every seat.

They stood in 135 seats and polled 36,327 overall (average per seat 260).

The most they polled was 1,769 for Dave Nellist.

A woman in Pontypridd polled 48.

In the 2013 Eastleigh by-election they were beaten by the 'Elvis Loves Pets' party, and the 'Beer Baccy and Crumpet' party.

Trust the electorate.

In UKIPs first general election, UKIP stood 17 candidates who averaged around 257 votes each. None of them got their deposits back.
In the 1995 by-election in Islwyn, UKIP who polled 289, were beaten by the Monster raving looney party.
They were beaten by socialist Labour in 96 in the Barnsley by-election.

Whilst I concede that TUSC only scored minor votes in the election, they did have enough of a base to stand enough candidates to warrant a PPB, something UKIP didn't manage in their first general election.

If anything, I'd say that TUSC fared better in their first GE than UKIP did in theirs.

You are referring to the Anti-Federalist League in the 1992 General Election, a forerunner of UKIP. A fully formed UKIP came about in 1993 and first stood in the 1997 election polling 105,722 votes for 194 candidates (545 average) and did not lose all their deposits. They of course did far better in the EU elections, quickly winning seats.

Don't let the truth get in the way of the point nick was trying to make...

In Bert's defence....

The austerity cuts are really biting in leafy Epsom - the Stables have had to lay off their horse whisperer and the Village Shoppe no longer stocks foie gras.

The poor lad is beside himself!

Comments like this piss me off. You don't have to be poor and being hit hard by austerity to care about what it does to other people. Guess some of us are just slightly less selfish than others

Alright keep your hair on.

I notice you never commented when Bert made his jibe about me reading the Sun/Mail/Telegraph and not thinking for myself which was uncalled for on his part and not the first time his smug belittling comments have "p1ssed me off".

I'll adopt whatever strategy I feel is appropriate to respond to other posters.

I can do empathy when it suits, but Bert is a knobhead who deserves both barrels.

As for you suggesting I'm selfish.... you don't know me or my circumstances so don't judge me based on what you think you know.

The Labour party are becoming irrelevant, as demonstrated by the SNP north of the border. Left wing Scotland and traditional Scottish Labour voters have abandoned them, not because these voters are anti-English, but because The Labour party has abandoned them in their rush to become a right of centre party.

People don't want a 'Little Conservative' party, if they did, they'd vote Conservative, they want an opposition party that isn't focused on corporate issues but the social issues that affect them.

Similarly, the Greens and UKIP picked up a lot of support on a similar basis.

Are you saying that the Labour Party would get more votes if its policies were more left wing? I think moving left they would get less votes.

Too right for Scotland, too left for England. Labour are in a right old pickle, and it's bloody hilarious.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Is it so altruistic to vote that rich people to pay more tax?

From my experience of self-righteous lefties, their 'unselfishness' usually involves a lot of loud bleating about "injustice" on social media and not much else besides.

Most of the people I know who actually spend their free time helping homeless people or whatever are quiet, Christian, usually fairly conservative types (small 'c').

I'm hoping Corbyn's supporters' second votes go to Cooper, not Burnham, as I've got a tenner on her to win.

She's sticking in there at 7-2 (she was 3-1 when I bet on her) but Corbyn's shortened to 11-2!
