American Psycho is better as a book than a film. Even though Christian Bale was superb as Patrick Bateman, there are chapters in the book that would never have made it into the final cut. The torture with a rat for example, the murder of his ex-girlfriend or the random murder of a child in Central Park Zoo. Chapters such as Bateman rejecting the advances of a homosexual colleague, or tripping off his face as he walks down a New York street should of made the cut. I know these are more like tele-films than 'movies' but have you seen Salem's Lot, Dark Half or Tommyknockers? Amongst the worst films I have ever seen! Although I start from a point of loving his books which is different to your basis for comparison so you could just argue "sh*t films, sh*t books"!

If my memory serves me, the book also featured the most wonderfully gruesome description of feeding humans to pigs, stuff that would make Brick Top shudder. If i remember rightly the film bottled the ending which in the book has Starling running off with Hannibal in a kind of gothic romance. It also suffered from the loss of Jody Foster and her replacement by somebody crap.

Yeah absolutely, it was Julianne Moore who took over and whilst I don't mind her too much, the change of the ending was unforgivable. If my memory serves me, the book also featured the most wonderfully gruesome description of feeding humans to pigs, stuff that would make Brick Top shudder.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

I haven't seen it actually but based on IMDB it looks like essential viewing. Any film featuring Paul Whitehouse is bound to have real gravitas.

As an aside, what did you think of the book?

I saw it through to the bitter end but got so bored with him about a third of the way through.
