I thought Hannibal was a fantastic read and a woeful film. I suspect Shantaram might meet the same eventual fate as Johnny Depp has his hands on it.

Mordici is a work of genius.

American Psycho is better as a book than a film. Even though Christian Bale was superb as Patrick Bateman, there are chapters in the book that would never have made it into the final cut. The torture with a rat for example, the murder of his ex-girlfriend or the random murder of a child in Central Park Zoo.

Chapters such as Bateman rejecting the advances of a homosexual colleague, or tripping off his face as he walks down a New York street should of made the cut.

Besides, a certain Mr DiCaprio nearly got the part as Bateman.....

As a general rule of thumb it seems Stephen King translates better as film than book. Probably because most of his books are s**t.

I know these are more like tele-films than 'movies' but have you seen Salem's Lot, Dark Half or Tommyknockers? Amongst the worst films I have ever seen! Although I start from a point of loving his books which is different to your basis for comparison so you could just argue "sh*t films, sh*t books"!

If i remember rightly the film bottled the ending which in the book has Starling running off with Hannibal in a kind of gothic romance. It also suffered from the loss of Jody Foster and her replacement by somebody crap.

Yeah absolutely, it was Julianne Moore who took over and whilst I don't mind her too much, the change of the ending was unforgivable. If my memory serves me, the book also featured the most wonderfully gruesome description of feeding humans to pigs, stuff that would make Brick Top shudder.

I haven't seen it actually but based on IMDB it looks like essential viewing. Any film featuring Paul Whitehouse is bound to have real gravitas.

The Godfather
The Exorcist
Goodfellas

Trashy airport pulp; masterpiece cinema. You wonder what inspired them? It certainly wasn't the quality of the writing.

As an aside, what did you think of the book?

I saw it through to the bitter end but got so bored with him about a third of the way through.

Shawshank Redemption - average book made into a great film

I believe I am the only person who thought the film was absolute pants especially in comparison to earlier Hollywood prison dramas.

Saw her do a lezzer scene with Amanda Seyfried last week in some movie. Still a quiver.

I've not read Jaws but it sounds like you got hold of that rare book that isn't better than the film.

The worst I've ever seen was Polanski's version of Tess of the d'Urbervilles (Tess). He cocked up the order of events so after Tess is raped she's seen with her attacker enjoying a row on the pond. For me that ruined the film.

Another example of a film not being anywhere near as good as the book is 12 Years A Slave. A really good film I'll admit but not a patch on the book, mainly because it misses the main point which was Solomon Northup's unending quest to regain his freedom. The film seemed to prefer to revel in the baseness of the condition of the slaves which isn't the point of the book, though Northup does address it.

I think the worst I know is To Kill a Mockingbird...as a book its a sublime journey through a young kids rite of passage - the film is just turned into s simplistic courtroom drama with the rest tacked on...

Totally agree!

Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!
