Maajid Nawaz talking about the 'regressive left', and neatly referring to the significant resistance he gets for attempting to argue for reform.

He argues for reform in mainstream Islam.

Here's Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins also talking about the 'regressive left'.

[Link]

In it Bill incorrectly attributes the 'regressive' moniker to Sam Harris when the originator was in fact Majid.

I'm not getting into your daft generalisations.
I haven't attributed negative characteristics to any group but it is your stock response to any criticism of anything by anyone. I'm very happy to slag of 'Brits' if they deserve it. If we all recognised and acknowledged faults in our own demographic then we might not have so many problems. Sadly, some are so entrenched or indoctrinated that they are incapable of self criticism or objectivity.

But you still want a solution that is effectively collective punishment.

What solution is that?

Ok, let's go with reform rather than deadheading the nihilistic extremists first. Which branch of Islam would be reformed and which sects within should be targeted the most? Some live by a very benign form of Islam so they would get a pass, i assume?

You are a member of the regressive left and I claim my five pounds....Let's be honest.

Again, you present a complete mischaracterisation of the argument inventing motivations that aren't there so you can deflect and demonise. I mean he states that it isn't a problem with all Muslims and then you go on and say that is what he is saying. One hundred percent regressive.

So you obviously ignore and refute what Islamic reformers say then?

Obviously so, and it's why they are so critical of people like you.

The 'regressive left' was a term phrased by Maajid Nawaz. It neatly describes what you, Nick and Kermy have done in this thread.

Essentially Islamic reformers are held back by the attitudes of people like you.

Fab,but utterly irrelevant to what I posted.

Are you a member of the "regressive, full stop?"

Maybe not you personally, but internment for all Muslims has been mentioned on this board.

You seriously don't know?

Again, I repeat myself listen to Islamic reformers like Majid.

Islam has two branches and both have similar problems. If there are any sects within those branches that don't then they obviously aren't going to have any issues with reforms of those that do....hell knows sects within Islam have been prosecuted for centuries.

Some of the problems within mainstream Islam:

Separation of religion and state, which means ending the idea of following Sharia. This is a very serious and fundamental requirement.

Ending of aggressive or abusive attitudes towards blasphemy and those that criticise their religion.

Ending of support for any form of punishment for apostates.

Ending of support that Islamic women have to conform to different sexual standards to men.

Worrying attitudes towards homosexuality.....far worse than not marrying them or not wishing to bake a sodding cake.

Mosques that don't sign up to this new liberal form of mainstream Islam need to be closed down. It's as simple as that.

For those within Islam with no problem with this or already follow similar views....well this won't impact them.

That really would be a measure to protect secularism if it were under attack.

I truly hope it won't get to that....But with people like you Nick I fear my current toddlers having to be involved in those battles as adults.

We shall see how it goes.

I hit the nail over your regressive head. Judging by your opinion you are apart of the problem.
