The idea that playing Royball will not get goals. In the last season of Roy we scored 50 goals with 46 against. We have at present 21. The lack of goals is not entirely down to missed chances. We haven't, for some time managed to create chances from open play and this has been down, to a large part, of not having a midfield which can function. Can rarely put more than 3 passes together, don't seem to break their neck to get up the field in support of the front players. I have watched games where there is 30 yards between the defence and midfield a and similar distance to the forwards. There is no compactness in our build up, so if we only get TWO chances in a game it was vital we score both. This is down to coaching. we have been a shambles for some time and the answer seemed to be just to the same with different formations till it works. Well it didn't. I share your concern. Roy (and board) will be content with 10 draws, so any thought of progress (or enjoyment) will have to wait till next season. Returning to Roy really is an extremely depressing turn of events.

I may be alone, but I'm actually looking forward to football under Roy. Three reasons: 1. He has many more creative, skillful players at his disposal than he did two years ago. A more developed Eze, Olise, two centre backs who can play a pass, Lokonga, Doucoure, Ahamada, Hughes, etc. Roy has always been a coach who's been able to tailor the suit to fit the cloth; he got Fulham to a European final. With the comparative riches talent-wise at his disposal this time around, I don't expect he'll give us a rinse, repeat of 2021. 2. The football under PV this year was absolutely turgid. Performances can't possibly get any less enjoyable. We've learned in recent months only that retaining possession does NOT equal entertainment. In fact, having the ball and doing nothing with it may be less entertaining than not having the ball but harassing the opposition without it. 3. If we get nothing else over the remaining eleven games, the minimum Roy's team will give us is commitment, honesty, effort, and a willingness to play for the shirt (simply because anyone who doesn't exhibit those values won't be selected.) That's not my idea of perfection but after the dross I've seen recently, it's enough to be going on with. I actually think the marriage of a set of players not short on ability with an experienced, demanding manager may just be a recipe for turning things around. Time will tell, but in my view we were sinking without trace under PV and a so-called "easy run of games" wasn't going to change that. It wasn't the results that doomed Patrick so much as the manner they were arrived at. I feel considerably better about our chances now, with Roy in the dugout, than I did two weeks ago.

You’re not alone Syd. I’m looking forward to it myself. As boring as Roy’s football can be. I really appreciate how well drilled his teams are. This season under PV has been beyond awful for me. We may even see Eze return to form and Roy pretty much gave Wilf a free pass to do what he likes. I may be clutching at straws but what Id give to see a fit Mcarthur on that team sheet V Leicester.

Nice to see the players giving the new boss a welcome. The more I think about PV’s sacking the more convinced I am that there must have been major concerns behind the scenes. Parish is ruthless but not prone to panic especially on the basis of results against the top teams. Vieira and his team were the future. Parish was sold on the project. I looked again at the coaching team. Roberts was PVs tutor for his badges. Big on theory and experienced talking to coaches but zero experience with the average player. I watched a YouTube video of an interview with Kristian Wilson where he said he liked to do things a bit differently from some coaches. Aigoun was appointed as Development Coach with the aim of building continuity in style from the Academy kids right through to the first team. The press described him as “a revolutionary coaching genius stollen from PSG”. It all feels like a group of coaches big on theory and low on experience trying to teach complicated ideas to a group of lads who couldn’t get it. Roy is renowned for keeping it simple. Every player will know their job and what their options are if they get the ball. In the case of Mateta and Edouard hopefully it’s stick it in the net!

It's worth adding that Roy also knew, far more than PV ever did despite the fact that he ceaselessly played him, how to get a tune out of Jordan Ayew. Instead of playing him on the right or, worse, occasionally as a striker, Ayew netted nine goals in 2020/21 in the false nine role. Roy actually knew how to make the most of what Ayew could deliver. Given our dearth of other scoring options right now, the chance that Roy could unlock Ayew again is a plus we shouldn't take lightly.

Quite a few posts this evening I’ve both thoroughly enjoyed reading and genuinely feel as though they have broadened my perspective. Kudos and much appreciation, a slightly more optimistic view for me.

I thought this was a load of pretentious rubbish from people that didn't really understand the game when I saw this rather than a positive. Apart from the fact that I get massively irritated by the idea of stifling young players' development by insisting they play in certain way, the idea that you introduce such an idea so early in transition process is complete stupidity in my opinion. Hopefully all these blokes will take their ipads and piss off back to playing FIFA.
