He had a name...
This boy was in Turkey, a safe country so the father has blood on his hands! I have to agree. Cucking made a great point the other day. Once you reach a safe haven as a refugee and decide to move on to somewhere that you favour or may be profitable you become a migrant. That changes your status on the political landscape. Also why risk your families lives to move on from a safe country like Turkey.
Surely if you have fled a war which began a few years ago and you have a family, your aspirations are going to be a bit higher than living in a tent eating gruel for a decade? What about Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco? Is it because the EU is richer, perhaps?
Of course it's about money! People are after security and a place to bring up their kids, they're hardly all going to be steaming down to Sudan are they? Being a refugee essentially means you are citizenless, and being citizenless in a Capitalist society means you have no secure means of gaining money, which gains you food, housing, etc. It is therefore likely that, in seeking social securities, refugees will pursue capital, just as we do to a lesser degree in this country (London doesn't have 20 times the number of people living in it than Sunderland because it has nicer churches and parks).
Now it's all about cash at least you now admit that much.
Governments look nationally not individually just like our government does with austerity so refugess should be no different to British citizens.
Time to move forward together. |

Good to see the warm welcome, applause even, received by refugees arriving in Austria and Germany.

The total population of northern western europe is 280million. If we all mucked in and took in 1million in total refugees from Syria then that is merely a 0.3% increase spread out over 6 or 7 countries. We will cope. They cannot. The total population of arab countries is 389 million. If they all mucked in and took in 1 million in total of refugees from Syria then that is a mere 0.25% increase spread out over about 22 countries. They will cope. We cannot. But as you and I know Legged, its not about going to a SAFE country - its about going to a RICH country. Many arab countries are rich - Qatar is considered to be the richest in the world.
So we are responsible for the Syrian civil war? Rule 1 - never underestimate the stupidity of the left.

A long time ago there was a worldwide picture of a naked teenage girl running with US napalm burning her body. It helped end the Vietnam War. The picture of the kid was necessary to give a symbolic slap around the face to those in power to do something. it seems to be working to an extent. Zig - you are missing the positive points such images can have. The Belsen film is another. Shocking but also truth home-hitting. Like the little boy. Edited by Kermit8 (05 Sep 2015 5.33pm)
But how else are the folks thousands of miles away going to know exactly what is going on out there? Sometimes words just aren't enough. It's the visual that makes everyone take notice. The famine of '84. Another example. I would say they -the journalists - are showing respect to those dying or have died by making sure the outside world knew of their plight. You may not like it but tbh who cares if it helps to save other kids from the same date.
There are poor homeless people already here, in our 'great' country. You sir are probably the first, and only person, in the world, to say that journalists show respect. Please do keep giving yourself excuses to look at dead children, if that helps make it all 'worthwhile' for you.

On top of that, the rights or wrongs of a picture being taken is different from what it comes to symbolise once its released, which in turn is often different from its individual circumstances.

So because you don't like what someone is saying your argument has come down to 'I care that this boy died but you don't'? It's like a depraved version of 'my dads bigger than your dad' and as silly at that other blokes "I'm marrying an immigrant, what are you doing'? Is any of this helping anyone?

The picture of that little boy unset me considerably, despite the knowledge that I and anyone opposed to completely unrealistic immigration provision had nothing to do with that child's death. That child's death was all to do with the stupidity and recklessness of the boy's father. It is frankly disgusting but typical of certain people to suggest otherwise. The west owns no one a house and a job....We can't even house our own. The point of a state is to look after its own.....Not others. Help is reasonable, and we are already correctly contributing to providing to this crises by providing UN funds that are feeding and housing people. We should take what our government considers reasonable asylum. What Germany thinks....matters nothing......They and Sweden are partly responsble for this mad dash in the first place. Let them take them.
I'm not criticising your views as such, it just reads as though you are so defensive about your insular position that you are pointing the finger at anyone else, even if they are a conveniently abstracted figure absent from reality. As for your claim that 'the point of a state is to look after its own', that is just factually inaccurate. Every state in history has had a foreign policy, be it an aggressive one or a benevolent one, and particularly as we move in to an era in which capital is increasingly mobile, in which climate change and war are displacing millions of people and in which resources are growing scarcer and scarcer, viewing nations as separated from each other appears to me a bit silly. In a way, the tragic story of the little boy washed up on the shore is a metaphor for this whole sorry episode. His avoidable death was the direct result of his father's desire for the "better life" in Europe at any cost. Not happy with his job in Turkey, he decides to make a new life for himself and family (and thus becomes an economic migrant, not a refugee fleeing a war-torn country). He handed 5000 euros (probably enough for 1st class plane tickets to anywhere in Europe, were he allowed to travel within the law) under cover of darkness to transport his family without lifejackets, knowing full well they couldn't swim. Why? Because he wanted dental treatment in Europe: This child was three years old. He had been living with his family in Turkey for 3 years. Rather than go through the proper channels, or indeed continue a process (appeals or otherwise) of attempting settlement with his sister in Canada, his father decided to take a risk and break international law. It is the rampant media, engorged on the body counts, the human tragedy, the drama, that are deliberately misleading the public (go compare the BBC footage of the family on the train tracks to the full footage). Obfuscating, hushing up, avoiding. To paint a narrative that has got the liberals so worked up, Europe is now flinging it's doors open to limitless migration. Utter lunacy. The pull-factor in migration is now enormous. Germany (suspending the EU law it holds so sacred) has intercepted several packages containing fake Syrian passports. I'll leave it to you to question why they were sent.

The photo journalist took the picture because in her own words "to show the tragedy and silent scream as there was nothing else she could do once she stumbled across the body" What other reason could there have been? She has taken thousands of photos. The fact it went worldwide was the choice of media outlets not her.

Once again, the tragedy of this family's drowning is the fault of that father. He risked all....More so the lives of children in a situation in Turkey where no one had put a gun to his head. He could swim in the sea, they couldn't. But where do some on the left put the emphasis. To pursue their ideological aims there really is no low they won't go to. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Sep 2015 9.44am) Agreed. I have just watched Owen Jones use the word 'compassion' and 'progressive' many times on the Andrew Marr show. He is trying to use the 'refugee crisis' to dehumanise the government and make out that only the left care about human life. That is the sick twisting the left will stoop to in order to profit from human misery.
