He certainly doesn't come across as one to leave without a fight. Then again he doesn't appear to have much enthusiasm for the job either.

Maybe fighting is the 'no lose gamble' move in a position like this though, and it's not like he ever admits fault, which would be implied if he stepped aside.

I expect that it will all come down to whether enough letters are put in (which might explain the move to change the number required) as once that's been triggered it's hard to recover regardless of the result of the confidence vote.

I think back in more ethnical times it would be hard to recover from a confidence vote.

In the modern age resigning appears to be a calculation as the least worse personal option rather than being some acceptance of unacceptable behaviour in a job.

I see the Tories rallying behind Johnson, especially after Wakefield deflected, which is only going to galvanize them to close ranks....I think Labour would have been wise to have held off on that.

Famously the end of Chamberlain.

'I will not resign' etc. etc.

Originally said by Cromwell as he disbanded Parliament with armed troops.

William Wragg, the Conservative chair of the Commons public administration and constitutional affairs committee, has accused the government of trying to “blackmail” MPs pushing for a confidence vote in Boris Johnson.

Quote In recent days a number of members of parliament have faced pressures and intimidation from members of the government because of their declared or assumed desire for a vote of confidence in the party leadership of the prime minister.

It is of course the duty of the government whip’s office to secure the government’s business in the House of Commons.

However it is not their function to breach the ministerial code in threatening to withdraw investments from members of parliament’s constituencies which are funded from the public purse.

Additionally, reports to me and others of members of staff at No 10 Downing Street, special advisers, government ministers and others encouraging the publication of stories in the press seeking to embarrass those who they suspect of lacking confidence in the prime minister is simply unacceptable.

The intimidation of a member of parliament is a serious matter. Moreover, the reports of which I’m aware would seem to constitute blackmail. As such, it would be my general advice to colleagues report these matters to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, and they’re also welcome to contact me at any time.

Apparently Muslim women make conservative MPs uncomfortable. Who’d have thought it eh?

Why not formally complain at the time? Possibly more to this but who knows these days

She explains that in the article. It would have been a huge fight to pick at the time and almost certainly career limiting. I suspect she is emboldened by Boris Johnson’s impending demise.

I appreciate what she means but, maybe such an outrageous reason, if true, should have given her the courage to fight it at the time. Easier said than done, admittedly but probably it would have highlighted the issue at the time, not over a year after the event

So it isn't an ongoing investigation or an allegation.
Who'd have thought it eh?
