A rigged game of everyones interests but the common man.

Seems that way. I feel more people are thinking it than ever, but not quite enough to change anything. I would like to see an out and out reform party. However, how much reform is possible in four years? Even two terms wouldn't do much when you consider our bureaucracy.

Private Eye - Queen declined Downing Street offer of covid rule relaxing for Prince Philips funeral

Moral leadership. Shows how seriously the Queen takes her role.

Yes, at this point any kind of political shake up or reset could only be a good thing when compared to the current set up. Like you say though, the system is set up in such a way to reject serious change.

Absolutely. And makes what happened with Johnson and his cronies even more despicable.

With the funerals being the event that loads of people I know are genuinely furious at. Being denied the opportunity to attend them due to Covid whilst they are knocking back the booze in Whitehall.

Indeed. With some maybe the passage of time diminishes what took place, but imagine if people knew this was happening at the time of these sacrifices. The whole thing beggars belief.

Rules on triggering no confidence vote could be changed

Quote The 1922 committee of Conservative backbench MPs is considering changing the rules on no confidence votes, Sky's political editor Beth Rigby has learned.

Under the current rules, if a prime minister wins a vote of confidence then they cannot be challenged again for a year.

But a proposal was floated for a "super trigger" that means a second ballot could be called within a year.

The aim is to give the party "more flexibility" and make the leader "more accountable", Rigby says.

However, to prevent there being too easy a trigger, the threshold for the number of no confidence letters needed could shift from 15% to a third.

MPs could "move quickly" on this as they don't want to change the rules after a ballot.

Quote

Hmmm. So is this really to make the PM more accountable or instead to shift the threshold and make accountability far less likely?

It's a 'the mother in law' Les Dawson style joke. It was typed in the garden while knocking back drinks with 20 or 30 people so is beyond reproach. Works do.

I think Boris will do a Blair and just not go....what was it...a million marched over the war and basically nothing happened. Mind you the media loved him.

I could be wrong but I think the media will see the limit of its power here.....normally they get what they want but I just can't see Boris going....but either way it will be fascinating.

He certainly doesn't come across as one to leave without a fight. Then again he doesn't appear to have much enthusiasm for the job either.

Maybe fighting is the 'no lose gamble' move in a position like this though, and it's not like he ever admits fault, which would be implied if he stepped aside.

I expect that it will all come down to whether enough letters are put in (which might explain the move to change the number required) as once that's been triggered it's hard to recover regardless of the result of the confidence vote.
