It is not uncommon to send them to hotels. Years ago when Sangatte was shut, a hotel in Crawley was booked completely for the arrivals, until such time as they were housed. All young men, complaints by female staff of harassment and when they left, the hotel needed complete refurbishment to make good the damage caused.

It would be nice if people didn't confuse immigration with illegal migrants. Last year there were nearly 1,900 people illegally crossing the channel. Most of whom, apparently, had 'strong claims' to asylum. It is interesting that this is creating a 'national crisis'. In contrast there were 6,000 deaths last year as a result of accidents in the home (normally in the living room or lounge) - send them all out I say. It appears it is not in the interests of current politicians to put this into perspective. Still, it gives the Navy something to do and keeps Priti from talking nonsense about stuff the grown ups are interested in. For the avoidance of doubt, I don't want illegal immigration and would like it to stop but this issue and fishing rights seem to get a lot more attention than they deserve. Must be because we all want to be salty sea dogs.

Most of whom, apparently, had 'strong claims' to asylum.

It appears it is not in the interests of current politicians to put this into perspective. Still, it gives the Navy something to do and keeps Priti from talking nonsense about stuff the grown ups are interested in.

For the avoidance of doubt, I don't want illegal immigration and would like it to stop but this issue and fishing rights seem to get a lot more attention than they deserve. Must be because we all want to be salty sea dogs.

How many arrived at airports with no documents? Gatwick were getting daily arrivals. I know you seem to know everything but how do you know most had a strong claim to asylum? Have you interviewed thema nd listened to their claims? Many of these are economic migrants and therefore are illegal entrants. Genuine refugees would seek refuge in the first safe haven , so please explain why those with such a strong asylum claim did not claim in all the EU countries that had travelled through to get here. You may wish to make light of the national crisis claim but how many arrivals do you consider would be acceptable until it is considered a crisis? They would be the ones identified, there were a lot more than that. How many arrived at airports with no documents? Gatwick were getting daily arrivals. I know you seem to know everything but how do you know most had a strong claim to asylum? Have you interviewed thema nd listened to their claims? Genuine refugees would seek refuge in the first safe haven , so please explain why those with such a strong asylum claim did not claim in all the EU countries that had travelled through to get here.
