Don't these two statements essentially contradict each other - The solution needs to be global, but you want the UK response to be determined nationally. Surely any global or multinational solution will require leeway to impose responsibilities etc, otherwise it simply allows individual nations to utilise a humanitarian crisis for national political gain. (Ironically, we could be using the Asylum issue created by Syria as a means of restricting EU working migration - We won't because that isn't in the interest of the people who really determine policy - Corporations). If that is the case, why belong to an expensive, cumbersome, failing, bureaucratic, semi-democratic mishmash of conflicting national interests that to your mind is powerless?

I like this.......a lot! awaits jamie's response (suspects jamie will have to trawl beyond Wikipedia/Mumsnet for an acceptable answer to this fantastic question)

No the point I was trying to make is that the issues have become muddled when they should be quite separate.

Did anyone else hear that snippet of information about how seriously Libya are acting to prevent people smugglers taking refugees to Greece on R4's Today Programme yesterday? Apparently their main Coastguard is a fisherman that also owns a restaurant, which is his main job. Hard to imagine the people smugglers being able to launch their inflatable boats under that level of surveillance by the Coastguard.

I'm generally in agreement with the out vote, but probably for more left wing views regarding the exploitation of workers, corporate favouritism in EU legislation over national interests and the end of cheap labour to drive down wage demands.

In all fairness to Libya, its not really a country anymore, but a series of quasi-state groups jostling for power.

And this relatively short era of peace will go down in future history books as an aberration. Give it 30 or 40 years and there will be shots fired again over fishing rights, incursions, politician being cvnts, power-plays, etc. It's what Western Europe does best and always has done: War. One cannot help by think you are trying to latch on fear. For example, you are scaremongering, something you have said previously thought was wrong. What's going on, Michael?
