The negative comments about him do not surprise me. Over the past ten years Palace have not nurtured what skilful talent they've had. Think of Michael Hughes, Ben Watson, Owen Garvan, Barry Bannon, etc. We don't play in a style that encourages creativity and the fans show no understanding or patience either. Consider, why have we only scored 20 goals in 22? The uninitiated will say incompetent strikers but the reality is lack of service. With a 'destructive midfield' of the likes of Milivojevic, Kouayate, etc it will always be so. I feel sorry for Tosun, he will probably go the way of Gayle, Murray - frustratingly chasing after bits and scraps. In short Meyer should be encouraged and played in his correct position.

This was very noticeable on Saturday. Even when he had time on the ball he didn't look a threat. I can see why Roy was reluctant to start him in a lot of games. He probably needs to add some bulk to be effective in that role or he's a passenger in some games..

it's no coincidence that when he plays inside of Wilf, the latter comes alive. it's hard for him to make an impact as a result esp when he gets the ball and the options in front of him are limited due to the tactics we employ of sitting the majority of the team in the middle to lower third of the pitch. He'd slot straight into Arsenal, Leicester or Man Citys side without a fuss and then people would be complaining why he didnt play like that for us!

Good point, I have been thinking/saying this for a while. Our strikers do get a bad press but it's not as if they are all missing one-on-one's from being played in every week or open goals, we rarely create clear cut opportunities. A bit of magic from Wilf, Andros or Jordan, a penalty, a Schlupp or PvA rocket, most of our goals seem to come from half-chances. The only thing I can think of to counter this is that Benteke got 17 his first season and Bats a few in not many games last. Even so, we are lacking any playmaking in the middle of the park.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Roy gets us playing when we need to. Otherwise, he has us on a leash. It's true we don't score many. Partly that's because we don't try to for large parts of many games. I doubt Roy even particularly wanted us to score before Arsenal did om Saturday.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Hughes was brilliant for Palace. As was Watson. Garvan and Bannan. Average. Actually in fairness Barry did pretty well, considering. However, I'd struggle to put any of those in the category of 'creative talent'. Bostock, Zaha, Moses, Bolasie, yes. Fully nurtured (with the exception of bostock, prat). So not sure what the point is here. If Meyer was a foot taller and more physical he'd be a regular. As it is, there's a reason we got him in on a free without any competition. As a kid he was outstanding but once he had to hack it with men he just couldn't. Either at Schalke or here. A very small proportion of players have left Palace unappreciated and gone on to have stellar careers elsewhere

A look at his stats suggests that he was fairly prolific in his late teens but after appearing in the Olympics in 2016 this dried up and his form in the two years before joining us was very scratchy with no goals or assists.

Edited by SW19 CPFC (14 Jan 2020 4.52pm) He's the same size as Cabaye, near enough. And he is a giant compared to Torriera at Arsenal. It isn't his size that is the problem. But I agree he's not physical enough.

Was mentioned before, Messi and his compatriots at Barcelona is not that "bulked up" so what is the point? Play Meyer where he should be played - not put him out on the wing.

Not sure Michael Hughes was a Max Meyer type player. Tough tackling midfielder, though he could spray a pass. Thought he was brilliant for us. Meyer is a bet meh.
