Soldiers around the Eiffel Tower and Airport were from the Foreign Legion. If France decide to put boots on the ground you can guarantee it will be the FFR at the forefront. They are and always have been politically expendable.

I can't say for sure but I believe that parts of 2e REP (GCP)were involved in Saint Denis

No, not really. Its a logistic nightmare to support troops in Syria as supply lines would either have to run through Iraq (via the Sunni Triangle) into Syria or via Turkey and Kurdish territory (and Turkey is never going to allow that). Its complicated by the fact that some of the 'good' rebel factions aren't much more pro-Western than IS, the fact there is an ongoing civil war with at least four clearly different factions (one of which is the Assad Regime who won't be too compliant either)

Potentially supply routes would have to cross a number of different fronts, if you only wanted to engage with IS across the country, and maintaining those lines of support would be exceptionally difficult given the distances of territory (and the value of the supplies).

To achieve a reasonable goal, you have to look at a full scale invasion via Turkey and the Kurdish republic, or coming down through Israel (which would mean taking on the Assad Regime as well), or pacifying the Sunni Triangle.

Other options would be the Kingdom of Jordan or Lebannon, neither of which are particually reliable or stable. Hezzbollah in Lebannon aren't going to be too keen on the first, and Jordan notoriously refuses to take sides.

I'm not sure the French rugby federation are the best choice for the job.

Optimistic as ever

After watching the very annoying Question Time last night I have concluded that many people seem to be focused on what ISIL want us to do and what will happen after any assault on them and the loss of lives etc. This is all the language of fear. We must not worry about what ISIL want and how they are playing us, we must destroy them in the territory they hold and we must round up and imprison or deport anyone involved with them. There is no negotiation to be had, there is no easy fix. There is no chance of coming out of this without innocent lives being lost, maybe even here in Britain.
We must form a coalition of forces with the interested parties and get the job done. If we can avoid putting our own troops on the ground then that will be a major result. After all it is not Europe who stands to lose the most if ISIL remain effective in the region.
Time to stop poncing around with what ifs and get the job done with all means necessary.

The plot to Expendables 4???

Not sure Stallone would use "poncing". Statham might I suppose.

nato ground troops could wipe out the ragtag IS in Northern Syria in weeks and be home by Xmas.

There just isn't the will or political opportunity to do it.

Also, this is exactly what ISIS/L / Da'esh wants. It would outrage / radicalise Muslims the world over who would then start the crowd-sourced terror campaign these f***ers so desperately want to happen.

At least the big boys over here have got round the table and come up with a good bit of help should we ever find ourselves in the same situation...

2...Hide
3...Unfortunately they are still working on this option
