A big difference was that we had about 9 less pens this season - mainly due to Zaha not taking on defenders and just passing the ball backwards most of the time.

I think it's more to do with the opposition getting wise to him, doubling up, and fouling him well away from the area.

I think it is greatly to do with tactics.
Not being backed up by the midfield so not wanting to lose the ball by running through as no one to pick it up.

Just read an article on Palace in The Athletic that in the past season we have scored the lowest amount of goals in any season in our 115 year history.
Probably goes some way to explaining part of the dissatisfaction with Hodgson.
Could he have got more goals out of this squad?

Yes. Almost certainly.

But so could Pardew and that would probably mean relegation.

If we played Townsend, Meyer, Schlupp, Zaha, Ayew and Benteke each game we'd probably have scored on average 2-3 per game and lost on average most games 4-3.

Of course we need a proper striker, that much is clear but our biggest issue is the midfield balance. We play 3 of McCarthur/McCarthy/Kouyate/Luka and they are all identical - 100% commitment, work-horses, midfield 'engine-room' or any of the other stupid terminology you can throw at them.

There is no link between our relatively okay attack force and our solid defence. Sakho is our best passer of the ball, followed by PVA. This NEEDS to start being midfielders.

If we can blend defensive mids and attacking mids, the majority of frustrations will go away, even if Benteke can only hit 5 or less a season, Zaha, Townsend and Ayew can probably hit way higher numbers with the right midfield behind them.

I think my dissatisfaction with Hodgson is that he hasn't even tried to get any more goals out of the squad.Or at least he's losing ideas how to get more goals.
A stat earlier said that we are the only club to have survived without scoring more than 2 goals in a game. That right there is Roy's Strength - defensive organisation, so we've been able to pick up points by not scoring much.
problem is that for all your defensive resolve, you can't win a game without scoring goals - so he needs to find a way to do it, or simple defensive resolve won't be enough.

TBF he had probably researched it, rather than just making stuff up which most reporters tend to.

Better informed than most journos, it's true.

And that, sadly, is not saying much these days.

Welcome back from Barnard Castle, by the way.
