I would argue that Schlupp is a left back and not enough for a side midfielder. How many goals does he contribute to while playing more advanc3d? Not many.
If you look at his stats, Schlupp is our most successful midfielder in terms of attacking contribution. Played 14 games, 2 goals and 2 assists. Zaha 25, 3 and 4. Luka 21, 2 and 1 Macca 24, 0 and 3 Townsend 15, 1 and 1 Meyer 13, 0 and 0. I have no idea how many of those appearances were from the bench or ended in player being substituted. This does highlight how dire we are going forward though. Roy also clearly sees him as a midfielder.

He played as a winger for Leicester when we signed him. Palace boss Allardyce told the club’s official website: “I am delighted we have been able to secure Jeffrey’s services, he is a player I have admired for some time and is a talented and athletic player. He will bring strength and experience to the defence and will be a major asset for the club having just turned 24-years-old.” Ranieri confirmed on Thursday he was prepared to let Schlupp go for the right price after he fell behind Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs in the pecking order.

He still played as a winger when we signed him. Only because we had PVA and we probably thought we couldn’t waste all that money on a bench warmer! He was a centre forward as a kid, so a bit of an all rounder really. You are both right but I do recall same as ME that he was initially signed as a defender.

Schlupp maybe a better left back than a midfielder but that certainly doesn't mean he is a left back. He is in my opinion one the weakest players in our squad who shouldn't be playing in any position when all others are fit. Riedewald may have held his own for a few games at LB but over the course of a full season he would be found out time and time again. PVA is our only recognised LB and we need an upgrade on him anyway. I doubt Lewis could ever be considered an upgrade on PVA. Certainly not in the near future. Perhaps he will develop. Maybe. Unlikely though. 2 things I want to say about Lewis: 1. He's not that young anymore (22 going on 23, that's not young anymore, he's in the age range when he should be at his best) 2. Haven't seen him contributing much for Norwich, aside for getting into the squad as a starter last year. Perhaps he will grow with time (it's harder to know for side defenders how much they can improve), but he will be no PVA.

My original post was referring to the fact that we could do with an upgrade on PVA in general.

I thought it is generally acknowledged that footballers reach their prime in mid-late twenties? Look at Ian Wright. Perhaps you know better.

Lots of rumours in the summer that Roy ultimately vetoed 3 or 4 decent players. Rumours doing the rounds again that Roy has vetoed Carrasco. Obviously these are all twitter rumours so could be rubbish but the narrative is that it seems like Dougie continually offers players for signing and Roy is blocking a fair few of them. Catch 22, Roy's contract up at end of season, approcahing mid 70's. Do you back him or do you buy players he doesn't want trying to enforce the changes to the squad you think is best in the long run.

Complicated further by us not having a clue on his successor. If we did then it would sway me to start rebuilding before we’re so slow with age we’ll be lucky to be 19th and not 11th with the help of Guaita and VAR.
