Meyer is an awful lot better than you give him credit for and I see no one suggesting building a team around Benteke.

He offers as much as Benteke in terms of goals, that's what I was saying.

Christie is, incidentally, the same age (a few months older, than Max).

Edited by Helmet46 (26 Dec 2019 8.40pm)

Point is that Christie has 17 goals and 13 assists in 32 matches this season and Celtic asks for a pretty moderate sum for him (actually small if you ask me, having seen him play) and Meyer has not had more than 2 goals and 3 assists in the last 3 years!!! At the same age

Is this supposed to be an insult coming from someone who actually is involved in players transfers in real life? No?? Then why do you talks about these things?!
Oh, sorry, I'm the only one who is a FM fan ))

I thought Meyer played well today... better passer of the ball, ran his arse off, looks to move the ball forward at more pace than some of the usual slow movement, he needs to tidy his finishing but I think he has the attributes (if given more game time) to be bloody good.

He works well if he's placed next to zaha in midfield. I see no point selling him as he is still young.

No, not an insult, an observation.
Interestingly enough, though, I am involved in football - not to that level but at semi-pro level, so I do like to think I have a little bit of an understanding. The trouble is, with the dough sloshing about at the top level of the game, its easy for fans to spend other people’s money - it’s harder to maximise what you have - to develop, grow and change.

Are you involved in football transfers in “real life” then? If so, I apologise as this is all about opinions. I would never, for example, claim to be 100% sure on anything in the game.

I am not, but as fans we discuss the topics about football teams way above our curent level. Everything is hypothetical. But I can surely say with 100% certainty that someone else would do better than a fellow who has contributed to 0. It just can't be any other way.

I expect that’s exactly how Chelsea fans felt about Mo Salah.
Personally if I was Parish I would hang on to Meyer.
There are a number of players in front of him in the queue to go but, as I say, our current style of play doesn’t suit him. Now, it may be that you’re right but at this stage I wouldn’t take that chance - especially with a 72 year old manager in charge.

He was ok today but not the game changer some have suggested. Roy taking him off for Wickham tipped the game in our favour IMO.

Normally, I wouldn't mind him in the squad as a backup, but reports have been saying that his salary is gigantic, so it's actually a question if something better can be done with the money.

Also, he's one of the few players who the club could sell to increase funds in the transfer window (others would be Zaha- who is very important and a starter-, PVA, Townsend and that's pretty much it). I've heard there are only 17 million available for the winter period. Just as an exercise of imagination, if the club sold Townsend for 15 (Newcastle always interested, he played well there), Meyer for 10 and Benteke for 10, that would give the club an extra 35 million to spend on 5-6 attacking players of 5-10 million each for the second half of the season, who together with Zaha and Jordan Ayew could provide the necessary goals.

If you know where to look, you can find players better than Benteke and even Meyer or Townsend.

Reidewald was one of those players. At the time (not now) it was said he was one of the best prospects from the Ajax academy and extremely highly rated. There is a risk with this strategy and we’ve gone full circle here. My initial point was if we sold Zaha and I stand by that as I suspect we would need to change our style of play. That is why I would not get rid of Meyer.

Would take Joniesta or Barry Bannan over Max in a heartbeat.

Illustrates successive managers' disregard of ball holding midfielders. Also Michael Hughes and Ben Watson.
Williams and Meyer dismissed as 'too lightweight' or 'can't last 90 minutes' etc.

Kouayte and Milosevic are destroyers and contribute little attacking prowess.

Meyer is an artist and should be nurtured.

The Max Meyer fan club must have had their blinkers on again yesterday. The chap done little to nothing again yesterday. He had numerous chances to play a pass to put us through on goal but gave the ball away. (And don’t tell me his one pass to Ayew means he is worthy of a starting place. He is not fast enough or strong enough, can’t tackle and is certainly not good enough for this division. He will be no loss to us when he leaves.

Get your eyes open folks, he has been with us long enough now and contributed didddly.

He played, we won. So much so that we dominated and fully deserved to win. He adds much needed creativity to a hardworking, if somewhat uncreative midfield. It's all about getting the balance right.
