According to transfermarkt.co.uk we have 16 players out of contract... ... and you simply can't replace / recruit that many players at once. Remember when we tried to sign an entire new squad when we came up under Holloway? It was a shambles. We signed Stephen Dobbie, Dwight Gayle, Jerome Thomas, Jose Campana, Elliot Grandin, Marouane Chamakh, Florian Marange, Jimmy Kebe, Jack Hunt, Adrian Mariappa, Barry Bannan, Adlene Guedioura, Scott Dann, Joe Ledley and Jason Puncheon. With the exception of 2/3 of them, that's a shocking list. We should have been undertaking this process over the last 4/5 transfers windows rather than sitting idly by and hoping that the bargain bin would provide at the very last minute. This is a mess of our own making and we're going to have to renew about 10 30+ years old as a consequence.

However, of the 16, 3 have already signed extensions (Kelly, Jeff and Macca) so it's actually 13. Of those there are 2 goalies nowhere near the bench let alone the 1st team and CW who is just a deadweight. Then there are a few whose injury records are so poor they can't be relied on - Sakho and McCarthy etc, so it is in everyone's interest if they left. Of the remaining 8 i expect at least 4 to stay (e.g. Cahill, Mitchell, Andros and Ward or Clyne - not both). So we definitely need about 4 or 5 new players but clearly that's better than 16

Losing Van Aanholt on a free is a bitter pill. We could have got a decent fee for him last season. Now nothing. The rest we wouldn't have got much anyway.

As sorely tempting as it is to take this opportunity to throw a few underperformers out on thier ears, ultimately the object of the exercise is to have the best squad you can. Each player should be retained unless we certainly have a better one secured to replace them. Even if retained on his current salary (as unpleasant a thought as that is), Benteke is better than nothing, quite literally. To be fair, if Benteke was at another club this year, playing exactly as he had for us, we'd probably be happy enough to get him on a free transfer. That's exactly what we have in front of us.

GK - Hennessey, Henderson
Keep - Mitchell, Clyne, Townsend Harsh on Ward perhaps who has been great for us but we don't need three right backs plus Kelly who can cover there. So that potentially leaves us needing a third choice goalkeeper, at least two CBs, another CM (RLC on loan would be ideal) and another striker. Frankly we need another winger option as well.

There was talk that Mitchell had signed a new deal? I agree that if Ferguson gets fit we may not need both Clyne and Ward, but given the year the young man has had I'd retain both Ward and Clyne for at least another year, just in case. Plus, we know Ward and Clyne are good enough, we have no idea about Ferguson yet. We could also push one of the three to left back at a squeeze if Mitchell gets injured. Not ideal, but possible. For me the main areas to strengthen are at centre back, and on the wing. Our centre backs are literally knackered. Even though we miss him in midfield, Koyate can stay at the back where he's done well, but Sakho can leave, Dann can as well (with thanks for great service), leaving only Cahill and Tomkins, presuming the former stays. A new, younger centre back is a must. We also desperately need a direct and pacey winger to carry the fight. If we can get really good players in those two positions, everything else is a bonus.

Many of us have perhaps presumed that he was bought to go straight into the first team, but that is a sizable presumption.

Decent call. I would replace Cahill for Dann, if he wants another year. I think Dann is gone at this level since his ACL injury. Maybe Ward for Clyne too - lower wages and less injuries might be key. PVA looks like he's going so maybe only Tekkers on reduced terms, but i doubt he'll accept. 5 key areas to focus on this summer IMHO. However, if Wilf goes it will be panic stations.

Trigger happy. I’d be keeping Sakho and probably give Wickham one more chance to come right too. Quality players. Sakho the best CB at the club when fit. Give them a one year extension and see how they go with a decent preseason. And he’s, swap cahill for Dann. Love Scotty, but he’s past it.

Sakho has played 4 league games this season and played 14 last season. In the 4 years of his contract he only played more than 20 games a season once. I presume the Wickham comment is a joke. Palace's accounts are due end of March, so will probably be available early April online. With our wage bill being so high (78% of revenue i think) this is clearly an area that needs addressing ASAP as the current wages are unsustainable. Some fans don't get it
