Right now there's a 'Keep Roy' thread on the Home page at the same time as a 'Roy Out' one.

What a fickle lot we are. Or are we? It didn't take long for the Keep thread to say the opposite, and for quite a few pages a lot of support was garnered on the Out case and it's moved that way again thanks to sensible input from BTP.

I'm sticking to my view that Roy has done what he was required to do and kept us in the Premiership so has done his job well. His contract comes to an end in the summer so the odds are that he'll retire gracefully like the gentleman he is. Talk of 'getting rid' is so disrespectful to the man.

I reckon a straw poll would find most of us wishing him well whilst hoping for a creative and exciting man to replace him next season. None of us like to watch defensive and negative football, that's a given.

However, I do get the jitters when I consider who Roy's replacement might be. Especially when I see some of the names lobbed about on here.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

This.

Pardew has been mentioned more than once. Steve Coppell too.

Might as well go and see if Arthur Rowe can be persuaded out retirement, once we find what plot he was buried in.

Might as well, probably have similar ideas to what we do now. Fear of change is hurting us.

I am not afraid to change the manager but fans such as yourself lack perspective. You want to see a change no matter what, when Roy is keeping us safely in the league while the board are selling players for £50m and not reinvesting the money in the squad. How is Roy responsible for such lack of ambition at board level?

I want there to be a clear idea and philosophy from board level downwards. Some punt on an ex player or some foreign coach while the fundamentals at board level are missing is a recipe for relegation.

I do hope you will be there back in the champo if you get your way. Somehow I doubt it.

Just because we don't know what is happening doesn't mean that it hasn't been sorted. Perhaps there is a new manager in the background and perhaps he is advising on squad changes but we just don't know about it

We are now basically safe and Roy has said there will be no contract discussions till he has kept his end of the bargain and kept us safe. So with that in mind, it looks like Roy will be staying on a little longer.

It makes perfect sense in my book. Lots of fans won't be happy but the future of the club is at stake and Roy is the perfect manager to keep things steady.

100% Ambition comes from the top and there is none, apart from stay in the league. Unless there is significant investment, why change the manager.

11th in the premier league is probably the highest position realistically that we could have achieved.

At the start of the season would you have said we would have finished above any of the teams currently above us, probably not apart from West Ham and Villa who are having great seasons but have also spent money.

I think that Roy has done the job he was bought in to do which was to stabilise and retain our premier league status.

Unless we are bought by an Arab Sheik or Russian oligarch we are where we are with the recourses at our disposal.

This has been mentioned before but Charlton fans got bored of finishing mid table under Alan Curbishley and look where they ended up.

I always think that this argument is brought up by people who don't have a more sensible response as they omit to mention all of the other clubs who changed manager and did really well and there are loads of them.

Presumably you also believe that if we spend more than tuppence ha'penny we'll go into Administration again

I think we are getting a little carried away here....this is not the final league table ! We have just come off a run of arguably more winnable games, let’s look at it again when the season is complete and then judge how we have performed.

Although some people will probably want Roy to manage for ever he is fast approaching the end of his management career due to his age. To make a comparison with Alan Curbishley is not sensible.

Although correct, it is the fact though that this manager has achieved this for every season with us so far and is on course for another with a squad which is now deteriorating in front of our eyes let alone his, he should be awarded with a statue not all this horrible crap, he needs new blood on the pitch he definitely doesn't want his blood pressure to go through the roof next season.

The table highlights the status quo. It’s not a managerial thing in total by any means. It is in fact in most cases a matter of financial means.
Roy has done the job he was hired to do. The table shows that.
The only reason to change the manager is to hope to change the style of play, probably on the same budget . In other words an entertainment issue in the main.
For some it goes beyond that. They seem to suggest we could be a top half side , merely by sacking Roy.
The Curbishley, Charlton, story is ,whether it’s liked or not , a prime example of clubs hitting the buffers, approximately where we are now. Another recent example is Stoke.
If you add to these a succession of clubs that have flirted with the Premier league changing management regularly making little or no improvement to that clubs prospects. Then any reason to want Roy gone, are limited
unless the club has a genuine well financed plan to take the club to another level. Even the age argument , is not completely sound, because the record shows Roy, does the job. Any manager has to be followed one day, but it’s usually best when the occupant is no longer performing on the budget , or not thought to be able to handle a better financed situation. In this case he does well on the budget , and a better financed situation has a huge question mark over it.
