I’m surprised people are so dismissive of the likes of Wilder and Howe.
Both have excellent career track records.
This is one of the first seasons of ‘failure’ for Wilder and Howe had a very good career at Bournemouth until his final season, although his short spell at Burnley didn’t pull up any trees.
I’ve no idea if they would be suitable managers for Palace, but none of us really do, and to dismiss them on the basis of one recent poor season seems a tad unfair.
How many managers go throughout a career without a blemish?
Perhaps Guardiola in recent times.
But look at the clubs he’s managed.
Realistically we’re not going to get an elite Champions League manager so we are shopping at more of a Tesco than a Harrods.
There’s likely to be question marks against whomever we appoint.

I think Wilder, would be one of the most realistic choices open to Palace, if Hodgson, calls it a day. The main reason to say that is any new manager needs to be ready for the the restrictions imposed by Palaces financial realities, and yet be capable of getting everything out of that situation possible.
The fact that Wilder needed recruits is absolutely obvious. There is only so much can be done with any squad of players. In the Premier league, That applies more than in any other division.
He has proved he can get blood out of a stone, just as Roy, has done for two years now. Wilders squad was never as good as ours, yet he still leads two one, in results.
Palace are going to be a tough call for some time yet, but he would get an, if not great squad , a better one than the one he worked with this year..If he got out of a slightly revamped Palace, as much as he got into a Championship team playing out of its skin, for him and his tactics. We would be in good hands.

A depressing assesment of his abilty, he was in total control of who they bought, so if they have a poor squad its down to him. The reason he is leaving Utd is he wont work with a Director pf Football, who the owner wants to put on place.
So I cant see Freeman recommending him.

I'm torn on this. Part of me thinks that he's quite a good manager. The other part says he's a dour northerner who thinks he's Brian Clough. Nowhere near.

What depresses me is that virtually every name ,that Palace have a realistic chance of attracting. Carries a question mark , if not as big as the one on Wilder, then not far off it.
Let’s face it unless we go abroad or find an exceptional talent in the lower divisions. It’s a precession of people with at least one failure recorded at this level.

For some reason Chris Wilder is leaving Sheffield Utd today according to the BBC, I can't understand it at all but would you have him at Palace if Roy's contract ends this summer?

No.

If we had Wilder or Howe, I'd expect them to be better at getting players than Freedman, whom I just don't see being qualified to be our Director of Football. I'd say that Dyche wouldn't want our current model either, or Franks. Don't know about Cooper - he may not mind.
Anybody like Rafa would not work in our model, in my opinion. Could be a bit of a stumbling block for us.

Obviously there not better and getting players than Freeman, as they bought players that got them relegated. 15 Premier clubs have Directors of Football or Sporting Directors, anyone who wont work with them is limiting their chances of of employment.

Is there any sacked manager anywhere who some fan wouldn't put forward?

Give me Roy anyday. When he goes I want him to be replaced by another international/trophy winning manager, not some here today gone tomorrow nobody.

Oh, and for Christ’s sake, no more former players.

Peter Taylor,
Steve Kember,
Alan Pardew,
Dowie.

Need I say more?

Raise your sights people.
We might not get Pep or Jose, but surely we can do better than Chris bleedin' Wilder.

It's not particularly the DOF model in general that I'm thinking is a stumbling block - although it may be for a couple of managers - more our DOF model.
I don't think we're particularly good at signing players. Plenty have gone wrong and, frankly, look at some of our squad. We need a few players. I wish I could say in Freedman I trust, I really do, but I don't think we have a great transfer system in place here. I could be totally wrong.
I take your point about some of the signings these managers made. But, I suspect, there are plenty of players there that most would have thought would work out. Some did, some didn't. There's little denying that plenty of ours have not worked out. I guess no one gets it right all the time.

Former players who I wouldn't totally dismiss would be Lombardo or Popovic. I haven't been following their careers at all, should have googled them really. They could have gone to sh1t for all I know.

100% agree. Why are we suggesting managers who have failed in their previous jobs.

Wilder has spent 100+m in the last two summer windows and they have had the worst start in premier league history and bottom of the league.

Howe - relegated Bournemouth

I mean, surely we should be looking up at trophy winning managers or we are better off sticking with Roy.
