I don't recall there being any real controversy about the change. There were probably some older fans who felt they were being divested of a bit of club history but in reality supporters never really referred to the club as The Glaziers (not since I started going in 1964 anyway), nor do I recall there being any songs or chants with any reference to the name. On the contrary, the Eagles nickname has resonated with fans a lot more even though it was/is a slightly contrived nickname.

I was a relatively late arrival on the scene (1969) but I don't recall any special crowd chants (other than "PAL...IS" or particular affinity to the old claret and blue regime. When Malcolm Allison arrived he literally brought colour and a new buzz to the ground. I couldn’t wait to don the new colours ... my Gran knitted me a red and blue bar scarf between the first couple of home games. She then established a production line to equip Grandad, Dad, Uncles and Cousins with scarves and bobble hats on the terraces. Sourcing such basic supporters 'equipment' from home seemed to be the norm in those days. The atmosphere changed and there was a constant buzz as "EEEE...GOALS!!!" emitted from the crowd. A good Cup Run certainly contributed to the fervour. It's hard to believe the man was only at the helm for three seasons as he had such a profound impact at the club. Although he did return for one more season sometime later.

As a life-long supporter who is now in his late 60s I remember well the changes that Big Mal introduced. I don't think there were many objections as I think he wanted to create an image of a club with more 'bite. I for one think it was a good move and I like the fact that the new club logo links the Eagle with the old Crystal Palace. C'mon you Eee-goals!

"Big Mal" was a larger-than-life charismatic character who had tasted success as Man C manager but alas during his time with us we went from the old Division 1 to Division 3. We did have that wonderful FA cup run whilst he was in charge beating Chelsea and Leeds along the way to the semi-final at Stamford Bridge when we were defeated 2-0 by Southampton who had Mel Blyth in their line-up. Who can forget Allison on the pitch before the Leeds game at Elland Road game goading supporters by raising his hand to predict the score and of course that 'Fedora' ! A blue fedora is amongst my Palace memorabilia!

Isn’t it amazing that this was one of the best times ever under his leadership being a Palace fan yet he took us down two divisions? I loved being a Palace fan during that time, and that cup run was superb. Can you imagine the message boards now if that happened :-)

His first game in charge saw us beat Chelsea 2-0 with Jim Cannon scoring on his debut. Edited by Willo (21 Nov 2020 9.44am)
