I never escaped another cut when I was newly born - no skin off my nose. But let's not turn this into a Willo thread. Returning to Grealish, the A,Villa chap claimed he was the most fouled player in the PL - after 4 games !!

I have just one question on this topic. If the boot was on the other foot (so to speak) and we were 0-1 down in added time and the same thing happened to Zaha, what would our feelings be? Many refs would have given a penalty. I just think the ref. froze and didn't wish to incur the wrath of the home crowd. I think maybe the VAR ref. also flunked it. I expect Grealish and Zaha will vie for the title of 'most fouled player' this season. Zaha has calmed down, Grealish has not but a few more bookings will If we had bought Grealish with the AWB money our prospects would be rosier. I doubt if we will still be in the top ten after 12 games as our two wins were 'ref-assisted' About time the wheel of fortune has changed many will say ...

Extremely depressing and somewhat bizarre post in my opinion. When I watched the incident on MOTD (I had left just before 90 mins to catch train) I thought we were very fortunate. In hindsight however, I don't think the ref has bottled it at all and neither has the VAR team. Zaha makes contact with him outside of the box and even so would be a very soft FK as he is not going down from it and carries on, more importantly Cahill makes no contact with Grealish and despite passing the ball and being on his feet he clearly throws himself to the floor in the most dramatic of fashions, presumably thinking a pen is on the cards. He therefore gambled with trying to win a penalty and has been rightly penalised for it. Worse still, he has robbed his team and team mate of a goal. I am obviously going to have some bias however I have acknowledged Zaha's guilt of playing to much for a pen before and even in situations where he should have stayed on his feet or done something with the ball. If the shoe were on the other foot, I'd be fuming with Wilf once again and have to stomach that the decision is probably correct. Very true it a different decision could easily of been given however that is not the case and the ref got it right. Grealish attempted to cheat as many players do every week and ballsed up everything for everyone in claret and blue that day. Also massively over-hyped, was crap in PL before and had a half decent season in championship, do not get too excited. With regards to luck, in comes in and out numerous times over the courses of matches and whos to say what will happen in forthcoming fixtures.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

We have the Harry Kane School of Diving up after the international break, so we may well see our fortunes turn for the worse. Not a great day to be Grealish, anyway, seeing as he was also partly at fault for our goal

I could understand a free-kick being given for the Zaha touch to the back but never a penalty. The ref had a very good view.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Time to let it go. If it was us I dare say I would feel robbed, but moaning about this still three days after is ridiculous. In fact running up to the officials after the decision has been made or at the end of the game changes nothing. We should take a leaf from the Aussie cricket skipper who just said after Stokes was not given LBW that the decision is made. Time to move on

For me the main reason that Jenas (a past footballer of course) got so annoyed/worked up was the suggestion that a dive took place.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |

I also feel that the boy Grealish will make a rod for his own back. Although a talented player he is petulant and spends a large majority of the game on his arse! This in itself makes it very difficult for referees to decide if it’s a genuine foul or if he’s throwing himself to the floor. ..when not on the pitch in front of the mirror. No, the majority would all realise how lucky we were to have not been four nil down.

The rose tinted goggles are being worn in this thread. He passed the ball before clattering into cahill (which did happen). Didnt go down under the touch from zaha, it was the cahill contact that sent them both to the ground. In essence theres no "dive" before he plays the ball to lansbury, which if he was trying to win a penalty he wouldn't have played the ball like that. It was a goal, referee got it wrong, var got it wrong and we got incredibly lucky!

This post has been merged from a topic called 'VAR so far...' by bexleydave I couldn’t see if there was anything posted on this, but we have had a few games to get used to the system and at the moment the decisions seem to have gone our way. You can bet your life we will be on the wrong end of one soon, but what’s everyone’s feeling, personally I don’t like it, the winner against West Ham took way to long to be decided? I thought the goal looked on side and Jordon Ayew certainly did, that linesman was bang in line and flagged due to West Ham fan pressure behind him....

This post has been merged from a topic called 'VAR so far...' by bexleydave Looks very precise when they're analysing the freeze-frames, but VAR has a margin of error that means decisions like the one yesterday, with centimetres in it, are pretty arbitrary. I'll happily take the goal, but going to VAR to overturn non-obvious errors doesn't lead to the correct decision, it's just adding another element of fortune for one team or the other. Given this and the fact that the system takes so long and drains so much energy from the game and the stands, I'm sure there will be a re-think of how it's implemented next season. [Tweet Link]
