I have to admit, some of the ones I have listed were just me looking on Wikipedia for a band I love and seeing what their first single was. If it was something I loved then I've mentioned it.

I hate to be pedantic, but many of these debut singles won't be in there, if they don't meet the 'hit' criterion.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Whatever Richard Hawleys first single was,

Technically it was a double A side with King I believe , which wasn't quite as good, but a very good album - also liked The Earth Dies Screaming. Agreed they did become sh*t.

The One and Only by Chesney Hawkes
Mmm Bop by Hanson
Walkin On The Sun by Smash Mouth

I only named them because I thought it was amusing to mention artists that didn't really do much else of note.

Jeez, Bowie released loads of failed singles before this one, including, yes, The Laughing Gnome.
