Dunno how I missed this post. I remember coming to the film Lost Boys a bit late. The Echo and the Bunnymen version leads you into the film. I remember saying to my girlfriend at the time (who happened to be a big fan of the Doors) "have you heard this tune? it's amazing" and she said "yeah, that's a cover of a Doors song". She played me the original...I thought it was good but yeah, preferred the Echo and the Bunnymen cover. In general I was never really able to get into anything the Doors ever did.

I'm glad no one has said the Gary Jules cover of Mad World.

I remember having an argument with my mum about it. She said "I think he's done it how it should sound". I said "I think Tears For Fears had an idea of how it should sound don't you?".

I'll need to listen to it again but in my memory, the Echo version is exactly the same as the Doors. They didn't change or tweak anything - just replicated it.

I'm a fan of both bands btw but I wouldn't have that as a decent cover. It's possibly a lot of peoples introduction into the song (and it's a great song) which might account for it's popularity but they didn't exactly put their stamp on it.

Harry Nilsson - Without You (Badfinger)

Yeah generally I was hesitant to include covers that weren't particularly revolutionary. I really liked the Marilyn Manson version of Working Class Hero but it didn't deviate much from the original.

Mcullochs vocal is what elevates it for me above The Doors version. For my ears anyway.

Bowies the man who sold the world. Lulu or Nirvana. Take your pick. Anyone who had a heart by Cilla Black is a song i've always liked for some reason and is better, imo, than Dionne Warwicks original.
