I think it's the sleaze and two faced nature of it all (chairing the home affairs select committee) while doing this in secret and presenting a different public face. Personally don't care whether he pays rent boys, does poppers or whatever else . On a separate note who thinks his wife knew and do you think she will stay with him. Feel sorry for her

I think it doesn't exclude him. Having experience and engagement in something, generally makes you more qualified. Now his past indiscretions, are what he should have been buried for. Although I tend to agree with this view, the sooner this particularly stereotypical self-serving, weasel-worded venal politician disappears from public life the better.
Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |

I'm disappointed that neither Mr Hoof or Matt_Himself have pointed out that the gentlemen to be rented were Eastern European, and taking work from good honest hardworking British prostitutes.

Feel sorry for her Nature of public life, is you have to keep all kinds of 'generally otherwise acceptable' things hidden. Like being gay - Which maybe the truth of Vaz. Acceptable enough now days for an MP to be a gentleman who knows his colours, but its likely as not something that would have been career suicide when he first got into politics (not to mention issues with cultural acceptability etc). We do kind of insist that people in public eye live 'secret lives', when we'll likely judge them as deviant or perverts rather than being different.

He should be sacked. Not sacked just by Labour but as an MP. No payout, no pension. You f*** up in public office you should face more severe repercussions. You cannot represent people while purporting to be something you're not. Never mind the fact that he's been involved in at least 3 illegal, if not criminal, acts. And that's only the ones he's been caught doing.

Completely agree with you ...it's absolutely disgraceful that our boys missed out on the butt end of a raw deal.

The irony of course is that his position is only compromised because of how society views and promotes the moral persecution of those who work in the sex industry, and those who pay for sexual encounters - Which is a key issue for the Committee he chaired. Well yes, but there is the practical issue of coercion which is why up until recently at least, anyone involved with national security was vetted for homosexuality. The same risks apply to Parliamentarians.

Well yes, but there is the practical issue of coercion which is why up until recently at least, anyone involved with national security was vetted for homosexuality. The same risks apply to Parliamentarians. The reason was that they were open to blackmail by foreign powers, which was only an issue because homosexuality was illegal (until the 60s) and listed as a mental illness for sometime after. The absurdity really, that you were a threat to national security, because there was a law, that allowed others to exploit you, for being attracted to the wrong kind of consenting adult. That realistically was a pretty good sign that society was absurdly out of touch with reality. The other issue of course was the Cambridge Spy ring, and to a lesser extent the Purfumo affair. The problem is that MI-5 and 6 still used gay agents through the last century, they just didn't use them internal assets (in fact most intelligence agencies and almost all foreign intelligence agencies have had very liberal employment policies from their inception - MI-5 was the first UK agency to employ women outside of secretarial/Typist roles. The practical need of these agencies, makes almost everyone suitable in some capacity. Diversity is big in the security service. These days, mental health is a big issue on security vetting (more so than being a member of the communist party, prior drug use or being gay) because some of the big leaks/scandals have involved people who have exhibited mental health problems afterwards.

He's also a staunch prohibitionist but would happily pay for coke so he can take one up the ass.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that his taste wasn't so much for rent boys, as for gay sex. I've known a few people who swing both ways, but its not usual for them to swing so far as to being a in all male foursome. My suspicion is that Vaz is one of those career in denial because of his 'era and culturally'. His family I think are from Goa originally, and he was born in the 50s. Indian society isn't particualy keen on homosexuality, and Catholic Indians society probably less so. Poor blokes probably been living in denial for decades. Sadly, any sympathy for him went out with the numerous other scandals for which he should have been sacked for. Ironically, he was previously a solicitor, who went into politics, and now is likely to return to the law for his soliciations.
