Cantona couldn’t possibly have known the chain of events that his actions would set off but they did indirectly lead to Paul Nixon’s death. Obviously that’s not to excuse the evil c*nts that murdered him but it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the ‘kung fu’ incident which is celebrated so much in the media. Knowing what we know, some resentment is understandable. If all this had happened in today’s twitter era, it wouldn’t have been swept under the carpet so easily.

Firstly, it doesn't, we assume it has responsibilities, but if your a father, and your kid is more influenced by Eric Cantona than you, you've failed your kid. We like to blame other people for our failures, but in no way should celebrities or footballers be presented as role models or even considered them - and its a very stupid society that thinks that they are. They're an abstract influence. As a kid, the person I looked up to, was my parents, they were my primary role models - My source of moral and ethical grounding. I never needed anyone to tell me drop kicking someone was unacceptable or acceptable, because the use of violence is always failure (even in self defence - its the failure of being able to avoid confrontation). People abdicate the responsibility for their failures on to anything other than themselves - But if you're kids are learning ethics and morals basics from sportsmen, you're a bad parent. Not being a celebrity or on TV doesn't give you permission to act like a c**t. Cantona was wrong, but Simmonds was asking for it, and deserves no sympathy either. Wow, you don't believe that role models have any effect. Really? Nobody aspires to be like C*ntona? You seem to argue against the points you make in another thread where it's clear the 'less well educated' think sports are a way out of poverty and aspire to be like the top players. There are people that will celebrate actions like his. It may only be a butterfly flapping its wings in the jungle, but in my opinion it has an effect. And I repeat, his anger helped stoke up the anger of many others. He has to show self control or he demonstrates it isn't important and it's OK to attack people that annoy you.

No I think that if the actions of a footballer have significant impact on your children, you have failed as parent. Obviously they have influences, and should. Eric Cantona was a great player, and an influence on how people played football, and people look up to him as a player. But he's not a role model unless you've failed your children. But kids aren't stupid, they're not going to take moral and ethical guidance from Eric Cantona and his Kung Fu antic, unless their parents have spectacularly f**ked up. Also, I've not see too many kids from the following generation launching Kung Fu kicks into the crowd either. I've seen people play football in a style influenced by Cantona, and even raise their collars like him. The responsibility of a parent is to mitigate negative influences on their children's behaviour. In my experience, when you see people who are prone to violence and intimidating behaviour, their parents and social environments that generally turn out to be problem, not footballers. Its not violent movies, video games, rock music, dancing on the Sabbath, catcher in the rye but our social environments and parents that make us.

Whereas I blame him both for the Mancunians and also for the French. There is no other excuse

No, those people allowed themselves to be stoked up. You don't see this issue in other sports. Football fans enjoy the enmity and rivalry (Banter etc). They revel in it, and they'll use any excuse. Hate is an acceptable phrase in football fans parlance. Its a cultural thing in football crowds. It was the excuse fans crave, an 'injustice' or 'wrong' done them by another team, which itself permits anything. I bet those thugs who attacked Charlton fans on the train can come up with reasons as to why it was someone else's fault. But ultimately, responsibilities for you actions, if you are of sound mind, lie with you and you alone. He does have to show self control, and he didn't - As a result banned for 8 months by the FA and FIFA, never played for France again, fined 50k in total, spent time in prison, did 120 community service and got a conviction. It may have been significant in Man Utd not winning the league. Its not like he got away with it. The truth though, football fans like to provoke other fans. Take the Cantona mask thing, why the f**k should we care about that? We create a reason that isn't a reason to get angry, by finding remote justifications. But the issue, is within us, as much as them. We're just as bad (or at least some of us are). Its allowing these things to simmer and stir us, which creates the problem. Its worth remembering that the ban also meant he couldn't play in friendlies or games behind closed doors. I think its safe to say they threw the book at him.

Over 1700 have viewed this topic, i hope that at least half of those join in with the applause. Lets forget about Cantona and man utd fans and just concentrate on one of our own who is sadly no longer with us.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Some people see other clubs do things and just have to follow just so they can "experience" it. Just because others do it doesn't mean we have to. We've had similar with suggestions of statues when other clubs have done one. Dedicated followers of fashion. Doesn't mean I'm showing any kind of disrespect before anyone starts.
