What's worse - someone gloating "I told you so" or someone displaying remarkable grace and restraint when you know, however they're internally high-fiving themselves and saying "Nerr ner, ner ner nerr!"? Come on, Sash, you big prescient bugger, give us a big showboating gloat - you've earnt it. (Oh, the various quote-references-links probably need to be clicked for this post to make any sense. (I regret I cannot offer any advice as to how to make this post interesting, however.))

Well yes, and no it seems. Obviously if they came to an agreement with HMRC and the government, they paid a legal amount of tax, but that doesn't necessitate that it was the 'correct amount'. The problem is that this kind of situation affects British Businesses, and their capacity to compete with a company like Google, because they're UK based (and thus pay a far more significant amount of corporation tax, meaning greater operating overheads). As such, Global transnationals have a very significant advantage in national markets, against national based competition, due to their far lower overheads. Its a issue that nationalists curiously fail to embrace, the US franchisement of the UK.

Well I work in tax and I'm chartered qualified so have an inkling of how it all works. Tax laws are all political. The industry knows it, big business knows it, the government knows it. Every sector in tax has a forum between the government and industry which is effectively for the industry to lobby the government on behalf of their major clients. HMRC stand no chance. The existing corporate tax rules are are still largely based around the time when the UK was a manufacturing economy producing actual phyiscal goods. It's never really moved on to cope with the big boys selling IP and intangibles. It has however been very willing to bring in ambigious tax legislation for small individual businesses on an almost continual basis of restricting expenses, dividends etc. i.e. people who have made a decent living for themselves (the self employed, who have tax laws that are so poorly defined, its almost impossible to determine if they affect you). As always, the government serves the interests of big business, rather than its own citizens. The notion that its Labour or Conservative misses the point, its every UK government.
