Although very callous there has been an explosion of type 2 diabetes in this country mainly because of obesity which now accounts for 10% of the entire NHS budget. When you consider we can't afford medicine for most cancer patients you have to ask what is fair? I think I would rather adopt a European style system where you need some form of medical insurance and higher risk groups such as fat b******s would pay more But in the long run those who are overweight will die earlier, like smokers, drinkers etc, and avoid the hideous costs of rare and late life disorders that are really really expensive (old age care costs make diabeties look tame as costs). Plus of course their pension burden is much lower. So in truth, I'd say the opposite is true, healthy people with a long life expectancy really cost the NHS far more, than those with a unhealthy habits. The myth is that obesity can be combatted solely by exercise, if its a problem maybe we should look to dealing with the problem at the point of provision. Fast food and packaged foods, and their availability - Notably sugar, a central nervous stimulant that is incredibly addictive.
Hurrah for us! I take it you fully support a sugar tax then? I do, although alone it won't make much difference, the cynicism of the food production industry of compensating sugar for fat, to maintain profits on selling 'healthy' low fat foods is quite outstanding. Realistically, sugar requires some kind of regulation and control, given that it is actually a drug (its a central nervous stimulant, that is highly addictive), but its also a massive business. Its disturbing how something can be displayed as low sugar, and actually contain something that is essentially sugar by a different name.

I'm feeling charitable & christian so I'm going to start handing out cards on the tube stating "I wil shag all porkers (at least once)" Although, I'll probably get two sets done. One with a moody contact number. There are limits. Just not many.

I know on the face of it, it sounds very callous and undignified etc, and it is the wrong way to go about things, However the NHS is under strain (more so than the fatties belts) I know some people are not fat through choice. But a lot are just lazy binge eaters who dont give a f***. I know someone who has been fat for ages never diated eat what they f*** they wanted, and was pissed off thye were fat. Went to the docs said he depressed about being over weight and got a gastric bypass op on the NHS. Somehow that doesnt seem right, rewarding a self confessed lazy fat git withan op on the public purse when there are other much more derserving causes. (and before you ask, I have told him exactly what I think, his reply, if they are stupid enough to give it to me I'm stupid enough to let them. And for me, thats the problem not just in relation to fat people but you are not allowed to "upset" anyone's feelings by telling home truths. It's absolutley barking mad.

As for the 'strain' on the NHS, we all know the cause and it's not fat people.
Time to move forward together. |

If you're referring to the amounts of public money being ripped out of the system by profiteering Pharma companies, outsourcing contracts and Private Finance design, build and run contracts then I couldn't agree more. Or are you referring to fat immigrants?

I could become unemployed and inactive tomorrow, then possibly obese within a short period of time because I really like food. I'd end up with varying degrees of financial and medical support due to a lifestyle choice rather than as a result of any mental or physical health issue. It's all very well saying that no healthy and sane person would consciously do that because it takes a lot less not to give a sh1t and we've all done that at times.

The decider is generally the costs. The operation is expensive, but its a one off cost, that compared to the long term costs of obesity, mental health and sickness costs, works out a good deal. Its not really a reward, just a pragmatic solution. Its like the idea of giving smokers prescription treatments to help them quit. Over all, the cost is much lower than the costs of treating them in later life for smoking related disorders. Strain on the NHS from healthy people can be quite staggering, due to the longer life expectancy and the kind of diseases that form in late life requiring large care costs. Ultimatly, it does frustrate me when people complain of their 'affliction' (for me its depression) but never actually do anything for themselves, but that's their choice (I f**ks me off intently when people are depressed expect to be cured without improving their own life). But then I think f**k them, its their choice, they pay their taxes and NI and s**t.

I'd guess you'd also be a lot worse off. Personally I don't like not working, because the money is s**t, even if the hours are great. Granted, you get the rent paid and some money, but its not a great a time as the myth makes out. Plus, I like eating, I love food. However dole money would make eating a far less pleasurable experience - I like a good meal - That's my problem. I don't want to eat sh*t burgers, crap kebabs etc. I've got a taste for the 'better stuff'
