Hodges is a very good Alto sax player and i'm aware he played with the great Duke Ellington.

Jackie mc'clean is another favourite of mine,Albums like Blue's Nik and Jackies bag are classics.

he also did a very good hard bop album called Swing, swang,Swinging which i bought years ago.

Jackie also had had a great tone on his Alto.

I don't know his own stuff too much, but will definitely check it out on your recommendation!

If you buy one get Jackies bag, that's the Classic.
it's on Blue Note.

should you get it pm me and tell me what you think.

A good book on jazz is "Jazz" The complete story. flame tree publishing--ISBN 978-1-84451-566-0--General editor Julia rolf.

A good CD jazz guide--The Gramoaphone ISBN 0 902470 59 0 very useful for selecting good recordings.
(about 1995 but may have been revised.)

The Documentary/CD which I referred to earlier is " A great day in Harlem" the main theme is simple enough which is jazz musicians gathering for a photograph.

The concept of jazz musicians appearing in daylight was quite amusing!

This thread has me a little interested, I know Davis and Coltrane stuff quite well.
Are there any good jazz mags that anyone could recommend?

I'm sure there was a jazz mag around a while back called the Wire, not sure if it's still going.

Whoooooosh.

I remember the Wire. Was there another called Straight No Chaser? Or was that acid jazz?

Slightly off topic, but I loved the way the Byrds emulated Coltrane's playing style (but on guitar) on some tracks, most notably on 8 miles high.

I saw a byrds documentary a while ago , and roger mcguinn mentioned that , a real eureaka moment for me , yes it is , amazing . love the byrds and like john Coltrane ,it really joined the dots for me when he said that .

Also the name of a track by Cannonball Adderley - not sure which came first though.

I see the initial line ups have been announced for the Jazz festival in a few months' time. Any recommendations?

Recommend Cassandra Wilson.Good singer and innovative..

"Straight No Chaser" was written by the great Thelonious Monk...and to bring the thread back to base, was first recorded by him for Blue Note.
