Some nice contributions from our yankee cousins here. People should think before introducing any banners and flags anywhere, as every flag has a meaning. Some will play this down as just a bit of fun, but others do find it provocative and a such attendance and media coverage may be affected by it. Would anyone chose to fly a Swaztica?

Would depend on who was flying it whether it was acceptable.

I don't know enough about the confederate flag to know just how racist it is perceived, but it does seem strange that even in a country that was fairly slow to adopt basic human rights for large section of its population, that they can still have successful TV and films where the main protagonists "fly" the allegedly racist flag.

Flags are always designed to have embedded connotations and build more up as they are used.

This flag has some meanings that aren't representative of us. The HF didn't realise as they adopted it from a different culture.

It's now gone

Good job, it was nothing special to us

Get over it

So does that apply to the Mississippi State flag ?

Not wanting to be argumentative, just curious - and especially as Skynyrd use the flag as a major part of their live set (as noted before)

For the curious, the Mississippi State flag is highly controversial, and the state, unlike other Southern states, has been somewhat sluggish in making adjustments. It only ratified the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery, last year. Apparently, they forgot about it!

Lynryd Skynyrd reversed their original decision to lose the flag because of its racist associations after pressure from their fans. Fortunately, Palace is not an old Southern rock group and doesn't need to have people questioning our anti-racism credentials.

Mike, thanks for that. We have toured in the USA (made it across to Canada once at Niagara) and have seen Skynyrd several times in the US and here, so it is of genuine interest. Thanks for putting the record straight as we were unaware that the band had even considered dropping the flag and totally in the dark re the Mississippi state "lapse".

I'd be very interested to know why the owner of the flag chose to hold it up at a Palace match. Flying a flag is necessarily an act of communication, but I can't imagine what connotations the Confederate Flag would have within England or within football.

People clearly have too much time on their hands to be thinking up imaginery issues with a single flag being waved at a football game!

Hey guys,
Regular lurker here on your site, and Palace admirer from New England in the USA. Please don't adopt and support the Confederate flag in your fans' groups. I know it was 150 years ago when the South first flew this flag in our Civil War, and in a sane world it shouldn't be a big deal, but the US has some rough history and some insane people, and the flag still has bad undertones and dog whistle meanings.

Sorry to butt into your message board, but thought it might be helpful to get an American's take on the flag... and I'd recommend strongly that you don't associate yourself with it.

Best of luck this coming season...!

I guess you'd be a yankee then, I've got nothing against you fella's from the North but I reckon your Southern cousins would see it differently. It wasn't just the blacks who suffered in the south and even now there is a lot of poverty and suffering for white and black alike. Most southerners respect the Stars and Stripes as well as the Southern Cross which to them represents a proud history and has nothing whatsoever to do with racism.

Ever heard of the duality of the southern thing? Another band from the south, Drive by Truckers, have written extensively about it.

Stay out the way of the Southern thing.

It is part of one of the larger banners - been there regularly for some time.

Nothing racist I am sure - simply fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd

Now I'm sure most on here are aware who the Confederate flag represented and their attitude to black people. Then note how much black people have contributed to our beloved club. I wonder what they think about it. A pretty pattern in the Red and Blue or the banner that still attracts those of a Southern disposition and all that is about? Remember the effect of remarks by Mr Noads. That could have been the catalyst for Palace's demise before.
