What a surprise as the BBC fixes it for diversity.
Utter joke

I’ll admit I had to look her up as I’d never heard of her. The name doesn’t really roll off the tongue like Gordon Banks or Peter Shilton, but someone obviously thinks she is a goalkeeper worthy of a title. The BBC really are a crock of s***e.

Amazing, you go on a football club forum yet have never heard of the goalkeeper of the ladies national team!

Whilst I also would not have voted for her, that is how she won it, ie she got more votes.

In fairness to the previous poster this is a Crystal Palace forum I could not tell you the names of most of the goalkeepers in the PL let alone any other competitions.

I never watched the WC so I have no idea about this lady but as I said previously this years list of candidates were a pretty sorry bunch.

I do appreciate that may well be the case, and I am the same as you in regards Premier league players, not just goalkeepers, but considering how much over the top hype the ladies game has had in the last few years I am still slightly surprised.

Re the list of candidates, I have to agree with you, but it is an inevitable consequence of the lack of sporting glory for GB over the last year.

I too never watch ladies football although I occasionally stumble on it. It always seems slow and lacking skill to me but obviously enough like it to fill stadiums sometimes.

Who votes in these competitions these days anyway? With such a thin list to choose from and no obvious stand out candidate it would hardly be surprising if a little bit of prompting on social media engineered this result!

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

Twas ever thus.

Many years ago my younger brother was a member of a well known Athletics Club. Each year the AAA would remind it's members to vote for their preferred candidate. I am told most other sports do a similar thing especially the minority sports. One year the Anglers voted en masse for their guy but the BBC banned their votes.

The problem with any form of TV voting is that only a small number of people can be bothered. Who actually votes for Love Island?

Anyway this year's short list resume.

1. Mary Earp. Goalkeeper for a team that lost the WC.
2. Frankie Dettori. Great jockey this is a retirement present for past achievements, only he changed his mind and didn't retire.
3. Rory McIlroy the GB golfer who chose to represent Ireland. Rory hasn't won a major in a long time so why is he even on the list.
4. Alfie Hewett I have never heard of him I'm sure he's great at what he does but hardly a household name.
5. Stuart Broad. Good servant to cricket coming to the end of his career. So is this award now a golden retirement I thought it was about achievement in sport in the calendar year.
6. Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Well the first one on the list who actually won something this year and has a public profile. It probably should have been her.

I look forward to your posts. They are always a laugh.

As if most male football fan give a hoot about women's football.

The TV stations are desperate to promote it in order to fill their schedule, sell advertising or just to pursue a woke agenda.

I'm all for women playing football, but don't try and tell us that the quality compares with men or that they deserve equal pay or status.

Good point; a goalkeeper from a team of losing finalists, versus a world champion heptathlete who has had to achieve excellence in 7 different disciplines and fight back from serious injury in order to reach the top.

So it’s nothing to do with sporting prowess or ability then.

Didn't go to a mixed race female from the North then. Bang goes the woke award theory.

It's a shame that she has such a silly name. What were her parents thinking
