What seems apparent is that as this is a new virus there are few certainties, with scientists generally saying it is too early to confirm whether warmer weather will get rid of it or slow it, or whether people will be immune once they've had it. I imagine these uncertainties must make it extremely hard to make decisions. If the UK did go down the herd immunity route and they got it wrong it could result in thousands of deaths that could possibly have been avoided. Whatever happens I hope that from the largest corporations to the man on the street people try and make decisions about more than just their own selfish interests, be it handing over profits to support health services to lending your neighbour a toilet roll. Personally, I'd sooner make it a gift to them...... wouldn't really want it returned when they've finished

I hear that the government seem to be modifying the advice today and suggesting that the over 70s won't need to "stay indoors" but to be sensible and avoid close contact with others. Which makes perfect sense. With warmer weather around the corner and knowing that fresh air and exercise will keep you healthy going for a walk must be good for you, and no danger to others, so long as you keep the recommended 2 metres distance. My dogs will be happy to know this too! Building up "herd immunity" also seems sensible. If those young and fit enough to survive this get it, and then develop immunity, the numbers able to spread it reduce proportionately and so will the number infected at any one time. Thus the NHS can handle it over a longer time frame. If they get overwhelmed by a huge peak then the death rate will be higher. Unless I am missing something! I am wondering if China will see a resurgence once they fully release the brakes because there is no "herd immunity" there and no vaccine yet. The idea that globalisation has any responsibility for this, as made by another poster, is really quite ludicrous. Unless every country completely and permanently closed their borders such things as this virus are bound to spread. They might spread faster these days, but spread they always have. Knowing who is here won't stop that.
Hope you have a long lead then! Totally agree Unless they shut down all the disgusting markets it will continue Again I agree, there should have been a world-wide travel ban but, of course, the Chinese were not honest regarding the extent of the problem. My wife is still having to deal with arriving passengers, with no proper protection (only hand gel), Gatwick are even getting flights from China!

So the update from the Government expert is to stay away from work, pub etc,.....but the glaring omission is that schools are still open. What better way to spread the virus , than via youngsters who mix in wide circles and might be carriers who are less likely to exhibit symptoms.? While scientifically sensible to shut schools, it would cause national chaos Everyone can be a good Manager when it's all going great. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (16 Mar 2020 8.09pm)

Bit worried about the impact on the economy. Really worried if Billionaires Richard Branson might lose an island. Been told by my boss that we still have to go into London everyday to keep the business productive, I heard he's Kent's richest man.... His personal wealth is only enough to cover the company payroll for 20months!

Edited by Forest Hillbilly (16 Mar 2020 8.09pm) The modern home setup needs children to be at school. The financial impact on lots of people is going to be severe. Women or men who cannot go to work because schools are shut are going to experience serious financial problems.

Maybe Branson can divert some of his funds from his Space programme rather than going cap in hand to the Govenment/Tax Payer for a bailout.

Everyone can be a good Manager when it's all going great. The opposition seem to agree that the Government is doing Ok on the whole. Even John McDonnell agreed on radio that he wouldn't have done much differently

If the Government closes schools, the parents are still going to have to work which means the burden of responsibility falls on the grandparents the same group of people most susceptible to the virus. Leaving the schools open makes the most sense.
