After 8 seasons and £1bn through the coffers Palace will crawl over the finishing line with a series of scintillating 0-0 results, just pipping Sheffield United, West Bromwich Albion, and Newcastle United.
Roy Hodgson will announce his retirement and the fans will rejoice. A wing of the new stadium will be named "The Hodgson Wing" and a statue will be erected at the entrance.
And it shall be, Amen.

As a mark of respect to Roy's tactics the seats in the RH stand will face away from the pitch

I think that what we've seen in the last 6-or-so games is the pattern of our season. We're going to get thumped a couple more times, we'll grind out some draws, and we'll take the odd three points. It won't be pretty but it will be enough to secure safety. Schlupp and Zaha coming back will be like having two new signings and give us different options. I'd estimate they'll chip in 6-8 goals between them.

As a lack of respect from you for what he's achieved in the circumstances he's been under whilst manager with us you are no longer wanted as a fan, you clearly watched last night what happens when our players are allowed to copy Spurs did you not.

mainly agree - from last 10 games maybe 2 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats so about 10 points IMHO. Would love it to be nearer 15 points though.

Schlupp and Zaha - i'd half that goal estimate 3 to 4 is my view (Schlupp is hardly prolific and if he plays chances are that Eze won't - ok tactic away from home, at home it's quite a negative approach)

I doubt it. Some idiots will only find an excuse to pull it down!

I do think you are being a little unkind to Roy, to be fair, he has kept us in the PL with little support or investment in new players. By doing so has earned this club an incredible income. It really cannot be an easy job for any Manager to inherit a team that was largely put together by other managers and in some cases then try to fit square pegs into round holes. We saw very quickly, just before Roy was parachuted in just how quickly a team can fall from grace if you try to play an expansive type of football without the right players or Manager. In all probability there will have to huge squad changes, due to contracts expiring over the summer if we are to survive in this league, those new players will, in all probability have little or limited PL experience and at that point it will be like coming up from the lower league with a squad of players who will have to quickly learn their trade or we will almost certainly end up in the championship. The PL revenue streams will then disappear and our financial problems will really start and it may then be a considerable time, before, if ever we will be able to grace PL again. Please be careful for what you wish for!

Eventually all the threads on here converge on the topic of the manager. Just wait for the three week break that’s coming up

I don’t wish to have a go at you because I agree with a lot of what you post however I do find your thought process here confusing.

Arriving at a club where someone else has assembled a team is the norm for any new manager, unless of course he arrives and there is no team at all. Anyway, ignoring that minor point and moving onto the highlighted bit:

You start off with saying if we are to survive in this league then we will need new players which is fair enough I think we have all got that point and absolutely no one disagrees.

You then assert that:

1) we will be buying players with limited or little PL experience. How do you know this and what is the basis for saying this?
2) they will have to learn their trade quickly or we will be relegated. Well this is probably true but why would we be buying them in the first place if they are not good enough or we didn’t think they can adapt to PL football. Are you suggesting that we already buy substandard players and hope they come good or that we will be somehow forced into such a policy?
3) then comes the assumption that because of 1 and 2 we will then be relegated and not win promotion for several years. Why are we guaranteed to be relegated?

But we should be careful what we wish for. What, out of what you have described, do we have to be careful what we wish for?

It reads to me that you struggle to see us staying in the PL at all. Is this the case and if so is this because people have asked for a change of manager and you perhaps think Roy is the only manager that can keep Crystal Palace in the PL, or is it because the club have underinvested in players, or is there some other reason. Sorry but I just don’t get it. Could you possibly elaborate.

Eaglecoops, let me try in the shortest possible way try to elaborate as you have requested. Firstly let's start with the team inherited by Roy, this team did try and play the expansive football that many are requesting, both under Pardew in the second half of his last full season with us and again under FdB and the results speak for themselves. To be fair expansive football did get to the cup finale with Pardew but it was at the expense of league form (we hardly earned any PL points from the start January until May that year) and would have almost certainly been relegated had it not been for the points that we earned in the first half of that season. Roy came in when we failed to get any points from any of the seven(from memory) expansive games under Fdv. Roy quickly assessed that the players we had were not capable of that type of football because of skill their set or whatever and from then on organised the team that best suited their ability and to get a balance right to gain points rather than play football that was good on the eye. In doing so he has kept us up year on year even though he made no secret of his desire for new players, he was not supported in that respect, including putting up with one of our best defenders in years (AWB) being sold off, with the money not being re-invested in the squad, he stuck to his task, when others may have walked away. Most good experience managers would want a spend budget when taking on a top job in PL or they will not come as it is their reputation that is on the line. Secondly, player with limited PL experience, we cannot afford to splash the cash at the top end of the market and our antecedence says we tend to obtain players who are either coming to the end of the careers or they are fringe players in their existing PL team, often because they are either not quite good enough for regular first team football or are prone to injury or are just injured. Therefore we will need to find good quality players probably either from overseas or from the lower UK leagues, who are unproven in the PL and the just hope the cost benefit ratio works out under a skillful manager.

As for learning their trade quickly, if they have limited or no PL experience then it a big adjustment to be able play in the PL at the pace and physicality that is required, otherwise we will end up in a relegation battle. The large number of changes required this summer with 12 players out of contract will require a major re-organisation of the squad with some players having to be replaced. This will leave us with a largely unproven first team in this league so the effect will not be disimular to a team coming up for the first time from the championship thus leaving us exposed to the risks that come with that. I do not think I said we were guaranteed to relegated I was just stating that there is a greater risk with any major change in players and maybe also a manager.

Finally, there are many examples of teams that have been starved of investment in the playing squad whilst in the PL or the old 1st division and who fans wanted more attractive football (Charlton, Bolton, Portsmouth, stoke and sunderland), to name just a few.

Concluding, I'm more than happy to be mid table in PL than being in the lower leagues. Being in and retaining PL status is good for the club financially, with the
great revenue that brings. That not to say I do not like expansive and entertaining football, I do, but when it come to my team I have to be realistic and accept that survival in PL comes with sacrifice!
