They changed their set up half time and I don’t think we adapted well to it hence why we were under the cosh for so long.

The club can not keep relying on performances like last nights. But it’s not valid to say what Palace do is lucky. It’s based on very hard work carried out around keeping very good shape, and they have pulled it off time and again. That’s not luck.

Tekkers put it perfectly when he said after the game that the players knew they needed to be solid defensively, even though it was a tough watch. The way we were overrun in the last two games I do think for once that Roy was fully justified in setting up the way he did. Also despite 25 shots on goal how many clear sights did Brighton actually create? It's not like they hit the woodwork or fluffed sitters. The players almost literally built a 90-minute wall. Roy also made the decision to play Andros down the left and Ayew down the right (he obviously read my team suggestion pre-match) which produced both goals. He picked Mateta which was vindicated, and brought Tekkers on to get the winner. Last night was all about the result at this stage of the season, and the fact it was Brighton, but it doesn't really gloss over the fact that we have been awful to watch for the best part of two years and this season some might say we have had a large helping of good fortune. Roy can say stats don't win games, which is true, but it would be nice for once to have a happy ending without feeling like it's been achieved with sandpaper. Think these are both very good posts. Maybe not a tactical masterclass, but I was content with how we set up yesterday I think it was the correct decision from RH, was excruciating to watch for 99% of the game but at least we shortened our odds of conceding, I was dreading them hitting 5+ if we saw the Leeds/Burnley set up. Of course in this circumstance you pray that not only does that work but then you might get lucky down the other end and we most certainly did so the best possible result from those circumstances. I'll reiterate it's awful to watch and I cannot view it as being sustainable, especially with this squad of players, but probably correct for that game. The image of squeezing the last few drops out of the toothpaste tube comes to mind. No matter if Roy stays, a more 'progressive' manager, a pragmatic manager of the same mould or someone in the grey of the extremes comes in, I fail to see how we can feel optimistic without what was referred to as a 'reset'. We need wingers, central midfielders, centre backs and can do with wing backs options also. With fans potentially back next season, football might turn back to some normality of which we haven't seen this season and I'm fearful for our squad without considerable reinforcement/changes. Our season actually looks pretty good on paper but it certainly doesn't or hasn't felt like that.

Some people get a bit carried away. You probably won't see another game like that in your lifetime. It's hilarious that it's the weed and great that we got 3 points and we do look like we're safe but: Are we going to use the same game plan for the rest of the season?
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

Agree that the result was crucial but would you honestly pay to see that every week.It was like watching a lower side in the FA cup hoping for a replay.

We are in a very tricky situation, especially with everyone assuming we'll move forward with a massive overhaul this summer and a change in management and therefore playing style! We'll never be able to achieve all of that in a couple of months and where is all this investment coming from anyway?!?!? Yes there'll be some changes in the squad but not to the level expected. Unless we get Dyche over the summer, we should just stick with Roy until a suitable replacement surfaces. Points over style, all day for me ...

This has been the gameplan for the last couple of seasons. Once the euphoria and adrenaline surge has dissipated then perhaps it will be said that we were extremely lucky. Brighton can't hit the proverbial barn door and we defended adequately enough. I can't see this as a sustainable tactic moving forward though, who wants to see thier team spend the majority of the game encamped in their own goal area? We let them have the ball and invited them onto us, so much so Hodgson seems intent on turning Eze into a DM. Will we set up the same way against Fulham?

I think you are right in principle, but with McArthur for his battling qualities and Schlupp for speed at getting up the pitch we have looked a lot better in that area and they are both missed

Having a day off Roy in/out and just enjoying beating Brighton in a fashion that will take them years to get over. Our bus had its best ever game and became the first bus to score twice in a Premier League match!
