Other than that he has shown to be very below par. Ball control and strength are non existent.

the though of JP Mateta is better than the reality of JP Mateta. Others argued against me claiming his past glories (Although they seemed to ignore the fact is in reality he had one good season and then got injured and has struggled to recover any sort of form since). I'm getting the impression from what I'm hearing from todays match that I am somewhat vindicated.

I'm with you on this one. I totally appreciate that some players need time to adjust (Robert Pires was s***e for a solid six months before becoming the best player in England) but the game just seems to pass Mateta by.

Delighted to be proved wrong of course!

He was poor today (again). The only mitigating factor is that he had Covid recently and may not be 100%. Having said that, I tend to agree that to date he has shown himself to be weak and lacking in adequate ball control for the PL. We're still due to have him till the end of this season, so plenty of time to see if he can improve. I have my doubts. As to our 'obligation to buy', I believe that only kicks in once he's made 15 starts and that is still a long way off.

Mateta had a decent scoring record in the Bundesliga for Mainz team a bottom-half team.
For us, 2 starts and 1 goal in one of those starts and we all know who he scored against!
We have not seen much of him but in the games he has played (7 in all) he has not impressed one iota.

He hasn't Willo, I agree.

Was not his scoring record in the Bundesliga skewed by a hattrick or something? Form is temporary, class is permanent as they say, and I recall concluding that which camp Mateta feel into was unclear.

Just checked

He had 7 goals from 8 for Mainz in his final season including a brace and a hattie and then blanked the next 7. His other good season there was steadier there - picking up fairly regular goals after a really slow start.

Going on long barren spells not unfamiliar territory anyway.

Based on his showings for us, If one never knew he had played in the Bundesliga one might think he was plucked from non-league and thrust into our team.

Our starting X1 Mateta aside looked worryingly familiar. We need new blood and quick

Well our only signings have included a backup goalkeeper and a player who is injured.

However there are 3 weeks before the PL season starts and over 5 weeks before the Transfer Window closes.

In fairness our signings also include what we hope is a ready made first team centre half.

These early friendliest are never completely reliable for coming to solid conclusions.
Much of what we have seen has been encouraging, in so much as we have dominated the opposition in a mannner we should as with all due respect they are two or three leagues under us.
Having watched both games, it would appear we are still toothless,
As ever Zaha, busies himself until he forces a goal, but quiet honestly everyone else couldn’t hit a barn door. And if you took him out a goal probably wasn’t on. Admittedly it’s practice, but Palace even in league games , so often look like making chances is all you need, finishing them doesn’t seem that important.
Today the finishing was laughable, that’s my only worry, because it’s not a new problem.

We need Benteke to spearhead the attack!
Trouble is that strikers who score goals cost a great deal of money !
