With Zaha playing as a striker now and Townsend getting on, there is only Eze which is hardly ‘fierce’ competition seeing as there are two wings. No idea who are our attacking midfielders are. The article is a worry if this is how he feels. I’m sure he’s not the only one. Now is the perfect time to try out a youngster or two. If they’re not ready, it will be a good experience and help their development. It at least shows the others that it’s possible to get to the first team and will keep them motivated. We know from previous seasons that Roy will stick with his usual lineup. Apart from about £2m in prize money which really is small fry, it makes no difference if we finish 9th or 15th. Blooding youngsters is a better long term investment. I agree with you on this I'd rather see us play Metata and come 14th then play Beneteke and come 9th. In a usual season if would be good even just for expereince and to help get a reputation for playing youth.

Because it is not going to happen to every youth player, some will make the choice that their development is best served by going somewhere they are more likely to get first team experience, gutting for us but their decision. Going to Germany seems popular at the moment but not every player is going that way. To be honest if you are an up and coming star at Millwall or Charlton academy and you get an offer at the Cat 1 Palace you are likely to take it , but rising starlet seek future in Beckenham isn’t going to make a great story except for the South London Press, we will nick players as well and the cat 1 academy makes us more attractive. Your last sentence sums it up. Many are saying the academy is everything, our future, whereas in reality it might not produce anyone that we will actually play because we have a plethora of 30 year olds who are a ‘safe pair of hands’ and we can’t risk playing youngsters. It’s a sad indictment of the mindset the club are in where they must, at all costs, stay in the PL which inevitably dictates the line up of the team. Having a first class academy is all well and good but if there is no clearly visible pathway from youth to the first team or if the player simply refuses to sign a professional contract, then they will be free to leave and the most Palace will get is a training compensation fee of I think around £150,000/£175,000. So these players will only start to create decent income for us if we can filter them into the team and start to showcase them.

The gulf between reserves and first team, is enormous there is no guarantee that this lad will make it. We pinched the lad from Chelsea so he has no loyalty to us and will do what he thinks is best for himself. Some clubs have dropped their academies as they don't think they are worth it. Another poster (maybe different thread) has pointed out that our players currently on loan are not distinguishing themselves (yet) in the lower leagues. A while ago I posted an article about the youngest players to debut for each PL club. From memory most of them either flopped or had careers at lower league clubs so it's not a Palace problem as such.
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and accept that you will lose players just like PVA who will walk out on us at the end of the season. Edited by Badger11 (17 Mar 2021 7.49am)

It's better to have an academy and not use it - selling on the prospects if there's no way through here. at Some point we'll use it, and they'll be there. If it pays for itself, whats the harm?

Let's imagine for a moment that the academy has been running for a few years, and has a mix of average, decent, and potentially exceptional talent. Let's also imagine that the first team is also settled. It becomes obvious that not every academy player is going to break through.

Perhaps he should have chat with a certain Mr Bostock about what can happen.

He is not the first youngster to do this or will be the last. I am sure and would hope that we have learnt from the Bostock situation where as we get decent compensation at least. Some youngsters develop later, ie Ian Wright and some don't improve as much as they should. So would not lose any sleep over it.

He has to be something special at 18, or something horrific happen to the players standing in his way for him to get a chance at your club. so regardless of how good he might be, they will likely move on. you need to be The right talent at the right time.

I don't hold to the myth that if Bostock had stayed with us he would have become a regular first team player and possibly even a great player. It didn't work out at Spurs but he had plenty of opportunities elsewhere and has never been more than a 2nd or 3rd tier player. Yes maybe he would have knuckled down we will never know. Patrick Bamford is a good example of a player who failed at Palace and Norwich but he found his way at boro and Leeds and has proved his point. Bostock could have done that but didn't. Apparently he is worried he may not be able to break into the first team quickly under dinosaur Hodgson. I'm sick and tired of the Roy in brigade. Lets have another couple of years with snooze fest Roy ball, not bringing any youngsters through, but hey ho why not give another contract to that crock Wickham!!! who won't play for another two years!!! I tell you something, if Hodgson gets another year, i'm done with football until he retires. Have a day off will you

You could spend £50m and get Rhian Brewster and Aaron Ramsdale and the sack.
