I have just read this article on Sky Sports and the quote from Roy Hodgson is very concerning. "Last week Roy Hodgson said: "We've not sat down and seriously thought, 'What do we need?' That's because we have a good squad and a big squad. You don't want to keep piling players on top of players." We have no absolutely no creativity in the middle of the park, we have central defenders that are old and slow, a right back that may never actually play for us and as always centre forwards that simply don't score. Yes, we have a lot of players out of contract and some we should be negotiating with now (ie. Guaita), but others really need to be moved on in January for a fee or let go in the summer. Those comments illustrate to me that the club have no intention of spending any money in January, and perhaps just concentrating on extending those out of contract in the summer. Not good, not good at all. This quote is Sky not Roy, with players out of contract it’s only natural to state the obvious that the club will look at who to keep .. I’m just worried that Sakho, Tekkers and. Wickham will get new deals. As for Roy saying the club haven’t discussed the transfer window, it’s either bs or just really shows why we are in the position of having a squad full of underachieving, overpaid or end of life players.

So what did you crazy people want Roy to say: Yes. let's signal to the market what we're up to and motivate our squad to give up because they have no future at the club. It's not so much about what I wanted him to say, it's more why did he say this at all? Saying nothing is surely better for everyone. The only benefit I think from saying what he did, could be a confidence booster to our players by saying he supports the strength of the squad. But he could have said that regardless. It makes the club look amateurish without a plan (which we know we don't have anyway)

We already know that Roy has his favourites, and if you add on top of that there are no plans to recruit in Jan, then how is that going to motivate the players. They will amble through the rest of season knowing that their place is safe. Roy doesnt seem like the person to play games in the media, so when he says we haven't sat down then I'm more likely to think it's true. If we recieved reasonable offers for PVA and Sakho in Jan, I would let them go. As there has been some interest around them.Given that scenario, we should be looking at possible replacements. I agree that it looks like we are trying to limp through until the end of season. Given the number of players out of contract, there is absolutely no guarantees they will resign. Then we are left up the creek yet again. Sheffield United result is going to be a big one.

I don't believe that a single result, even to a club stranded at the bottom of the table, will be pivotal in terms of overall strategy. Hmm, so poor results and no desire to change the manager, plus poor ageing players on short contracts and no desire to change them either. Doesn’t really sound like a recipe for success to me. Let’s just crack on with what we got until it fails completely.

My comments were based on the single result against Sheff Utd, a team whose performances have been better than their league standing suggests. Edited by Willo (01 Jan 2021 1.40pm)

Anyone who’s ever had to perform negotiations, in the work place, will know that you don’t show your hand on day 1.

The fact of the matter is that this squad is more than capable of finishing in the top ten,so we do not need any new signings. We just rarely play to our potential which may well be our eventual downfall if not this season then the next...
