I thought it was found contentious enough for some. My mum was born in the Holmesdale Rd in the 30s for context. It was seen as basically American, the razzmatazz and all that. It was basically a marketing ploy, the NFL was seen as a holy grail of marketing - which it is in some ways.

I don't remember there being much fuss. No social media back then.

Coming away from the ground someone with a transistor radio said it had been an unusual day as all London clubs had won. I remember jumping for joy - at last Palace had won a game! It should have been the second time that we had won as we were fiddled out of a win by an incompetent referee at home to Arsenal as none of their three of their goals should have stood, which was confirmed by one of our rare appearances on Match Of The Day later on.

I can't remember there being much negative stuff. It was more like a new exciting era for me, however, although there followed a slide down the leagues, it ended up being a great ride back!

There wasn't much grumberling but there wasn't the the interactivity between Club and fans as there is today. I was alone not liking Big Mal because he shipped out my hero Big John McCormick I didn't like the change of name or colours I would be more than happy to go back to being The Glaziers in Claret and Blue.

Yep i remember the Glaziers nickname. We even had the excellent Bill Glazier in goal but to be honest Eagles is much more cool.

At the time it was all razzmatazz and 'plans' to be a big club, big manager, Barcelona colours, catchy nickname... Some of jus believed it, of course all went t*ts up. That's one good reason why many lifers are grounded when talk turns to entitlement, expansive play, Europe. It's been a long hard road so far and cutting corners just hasn't worked.

I think it was readily welcomed as I remember because for the first time we were getting noticed nationally. Episodes like Fiona Richmond in the team bath helped on that front. It was all part of the rebranding under Big Mal and I don't remember anyone thinking that being called The Eagles rather than The Glaziers wasn't a little bit more grrrr. Roughly this. We felt like we were on a roll at the time and this was a part of it all. I thought it was a bit American and flash but not to the point of getting badly upset.
