A different world back in the day. No segregation of fans. You even applauded your opponent's goals (even though you didn't mean it). Banter in the pub afterwards. A successful Div 1 player may have put enough by to start his own business (usually a pub) when he retired from the game. I feel no such nostalgia for the hooligan era. There's still an element of this but a small minority hopefully. I don't miss the sh1tty pitches either. Only one thing remains the same: the national team's under-achievement. (OK 66-70 was the exception). I recall in the 90s meeting a former player of ours. He had long retired with more than 300 games to his name after plying his trade for a few clubs. He came to view a flat which my wife (Then my partner) was selling. He was a taxi-driver at the time.

You just need to watch games from yesteryear to understand how the soul of the game has been eroded. My son marvels at how the game was...the electricity... Add to that zero fans...
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Still had to avoid Vikings then too.

And then, of course, there were those interminable arguments over whether or not the shot was over the bar. Those were the days!

It terms of football, gone are the days of rosettes and rattles and standing on rain-lashed terraces watching teams playing on mud baths. Bovril and Wagon Wheels are hard to find these days as well

The biggest fights we used to have were when the goalie (three goals and out) thought the opposing player had hit the ball too hard when only about a yard out. There was always a long argument about who whose job it was to go a get the ball. Also intense debate about whether it would be rush or stick goalie.

The days of our youth are gone forever and the enthusiasm for football has diminished with time. Sadly, football itself has helped to take the shine off with too much exposure and too much cost, but it is also just more difficult to feel loyalty or fanaticism for players who are now much younger than you by several decades and with who you often have nothing in common. With Palace in particular, it is also the fact that we have failed to significantly develop out ground or win anything, apart for the ZDS Cup, in all the time I have been a fan, in my case,50 years or so. Oh, and don't get me started on bringing politics in to sport. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (15 Nov 2020 11.57am)
