Very true.

Given the current run this translated to me as ‘Who do you hate the least at the moment’.

I think Guaita is overrated and has cost us a few matches but on the whole has not been too bad. I also think the same for Ayew, he’s done well to the extent a lot of people thought he was useless and only cost a couple mil, but he’s been our striker for most the season and hasn’t even hit double figures so not all that great but decent effort.

I don’t quite agree with earlier posts re: Cahill not that good, but I do understand. On the whole though, he has performed very well for us and I would credit him more with us staying up despite a despairingly pathetic lack of goals, even by our standards, and the essential 1-0 run of wins that ultimately kept us up, than Guaita.

Big Gary for me.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I think Jimmy Mc has played least badly all season so he gets my vote.

Cahill or Ayew. I think Cahill surprised many by still being able to play so well having been left out by Chelsea for a whole year. Did a lot to keep us up though like everyone else, disappointed by his lack of goals for someone with such a good scoring record. Ayew was perhaps the most improved player (having been very poor last year in my opinion). His goal aginst WHam is easily the best of the season and one of the best I've ever seen at Selhurst.

Cannot see how people can still be suggesting Guaita. He made a few decent saves (especially the point-blank header at home to Wolves) but his howlers have cost us defeats to Sheff Utd, Burnley and Leicester to name but 3.

Absolutely. People complain about the wage bill, aging squad, and lack of a right back or striker.

What does the manager to, bring in a two players into positions where we both have ample cover.

He's been great, but I would have prefered the money spent on his wages to have been spent elsewhere.

Ample cover but injury prone. I think all of our centre halves have had decent game time this season, and lets not forget Kouyate is the current incumbent reinforcing that point. Cahill was an excellent piece of business. He has cleary looked after himself so I would hope we can get another good season out of him to complement our aging pack.

I'm not saying he hasn't done really well, and a free transfer in it self isn't a great peice of business. But when it comes to complaints that we are weak in certain positions it does raise questions.

Imagine the conversation:

Roy "Steve, Dougie, I think we really need a right back and a striker".

Steve "Cahill and McCarthy are availablie, would you like us to get them in or focus on the positions where we are desperated".

Roy "I think we should get Cahill and McCarthy in".

It seems like it takes a lot of effort to bring players in, it's just we are focusing it all in the wrong areas. On top of a CF and a RB, we are regularly playing players out of position on the wing. We keep reinforcing areas where we are stong and not looking at the places we are weak. Like a gym bunny that always skips leg day.

There's certainly a problem across Roy, Parish, and Freedman.

Peter Reid admitted that when he was a manager there were occasions when he signed a player he didn't need simply to placate the fans.

It was an honest admission so I suspect your Roy story may have some truth in it. Roy was probably thinking better a player I don't really need than nothing!

Wow. He was voted player of the month, single handedly kept us from dropping into the bottom 3, without much help from Cahill and Co. Despite Hodgson playing a defensive game it is amazing how easily the opposition cut through us on occasion. Agreed his form is a bit s*** now, but that goes for all of them.

I think for me it has to be Ayew. He's stayed fit, worked hard and unlike last season he has scored goals and held the ball up when needed. Post lockdown he has reverted back to running down bind alleys a bit, but then the whole team has been pretty sh*t. Cahill has done well but he has only played 25 games and he did not shine in all of them. It would be a toss up between McArthur and Guaita for second place for me. Wilf has been ok, but that's not enough for a player of his calibre.

Simon Jordan said he did the same thing with Akinbiyi.

Trevor Francis claimed he was the best defensive striker he'd ever seen. Jordan then signed him against his instincts.

Definately red flag territory.

It has to be Ayew for me.

He scored the winning goal in 5 matches (Villa, West Ham twice, Watford & Brighton). That's 10 points gained, without which we would be in the relegation zone.

Notable contributions too from Guaita and Cahill. The rest have been distinctly average.

You have a strange take on events, I cannot believe anyone is suggesting that Cahill on a free, wasn’t good bit of business.

Why is Freeman getting stick from you, he brought in Cahill, Guaita, Ferguson for free, Ayew 4m McCarthy 3m. Big Sam brought in 4 players for over £40m. Just wondering what Freeman has done wrong.

Freedman didn't bring in those really required, a right back, a midfielder who knew what the oppositions half looked like, cover at winger, cover at left back and another forward. Forget Ferguson because he has just arrived however as good as the other signings were, the positions they covered were not where our biggest weaknesses were.

As it happens Ayew pulled the rabbit out the hat and chipped in with a lot more goals than anyone would have expected after his loan spell (thanks for that btw Jordan otherwise we would have been deep in it). McCarthy has been underwhelming but solid, Cahill and Guaita excellent. There is still no proper explanation as to why a right back which was a glaring deficiency along with a centre forward wasn't filled in either window.
