This quote from the article scares me: "But successive one-year plans to stay in the division have an expiry date, and given the first-team squad’s age profile, it’s rapidly approaching." I think of Stoke and Bournemouth being two teams that we envied as stable in past years. We have no young players contributing this year, for whatever reason.

I had high hopes of Meyer when he came. He is a neat and tidy player who passes well but he is not much of a goal threat and looks to lightweight to play a holding midfield role. On plus side he was a free signing on down side i think we can get in a better player for the wages he is on. there is no such thing as a free transfer at our level of football. The transfer fee savings go into the wages and agent fees.

If that £20 million is anywhere near accurate it’s a sobering thought.

That was the point I raised on another thread. Roy is on another 12 month contract. Understandable given his age. But hardly helps in anything other than short term planning. While the squad's average age is rightly a cause for concern, this can be addressed over 2-3 transfer windows, it doesn't have to be done all in one go and nor should it.

There have been many players over the years who have struggled because of this. One that sticks in my mind was Belgian International Roger Van Gool who played at Coventry in 80/81. He spent a lot of matches looking dumbstruck and shaking his head that no-one had passed the ball into the acre of space he had just created for himself, or he would play the killer pass into an area his fellow forward was stood looking at. They said when he left it was because he wasn’t on the same wavelength as the rest of the team whereas most fans thought he was simply too good for them. As many have already said, Meyer is a decent player playing in the wrong team. I remember seeing a young Trevor Francis play passes only for his team mates to stare in befuddlement. It took time in the team for them all to be on the same wavelength.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

The two options are then 1) Give Roy no more money, let the club save for a predecessor in a years time. On a side note - the gap between seasons is likely to be short in order to finish next season in time for the Euro's. We can expect a whole year of games coming think and fast. Not helpful for an ageing team. More reason to give the frindge players a lot of minutes until the end of this season.

I haven’t noticed any of these killer balls into space that Meyer’s inferior team mates have been unable to take advantage of. I noticed in the Chelsea game the first thing he did when he came on was to give the ball away. I’m pretty sure he made no killer passes or runs thereafter. He’s sub average, lightweight and needs to be shipped out pronto. Why people on here are so sympathetic to him is beyond me. I know he was hyped up when he arrived but surely people have seen enough to know he isn’t much cop.

Zaha should be sold, replaced with a player that will compliment a midfield system that promotes Meyer. He has to be be built around and given a season run out. We also need to replace Ward with a young right back. We need to sell Sakho. We need to blood in a youth defender... Tomkins, Cahill, Dan, Kelly are more than enough at CB. We need to sell Benteke and cut out losses regardless with him... or, make it work where he plays and has Meyer in the midfield too... Either way, this summer we need to change a stale environment.

As I said, the squad needs a rebuild of sorts but that's not going to happen in 1 window, so it's feasible that Roy starts that process but may not finish it. If / when we complete he signing of Nathan Ferguson, I see that as the start of the process. We are also being linked ( I know ) with a number of players all of which are younger than those we currently have. Now would be the time to give fringe players some opportunities given the Europe pipe dream is over and relegation not a threat, but he aren't blessed with too many of them in truth. I'd certainly like to see what young Mitchell can do at left back.

There's at least 4 platers he could use regularly. He gave Mayer 2 minutes vs Chelsea and still had an unused sub with Reidewald on the bench whilst Kayoute was obviously shattered. He won't use the frindge platers at all.
