Slightly off the VAR thing, but for me another worrying aspect coming out of this is , how Friend , is being slagged off by a succession of not just ex players, but any number of ex refs .some only recently finished. Unfortunately so, can see it rapidly being the go to topic of conversation rather than a good football game, Will eventually result in changing the sport from football to VARball.

Yes I concede that. I believe the modern phrase is that "it requires more education". Pundits, the media, Uncle Tom Cobley and all visited Stockley Park where they received detailed information about VAR, it's various uses, scenarios etc etc. Perhaps SKY etc need to educate the general public - even if they have done so already they can repeat it as supporters are in a state of total confusion about it.Not been a successful 'Roll-out' at all. Some pundits on the 'Sunday Supplement' gave it a 2 out of 10 rating. I'm curious as to why they don't do things similar to how they are done in rugby, have the review shown on screen and microphones on the refs so as to hear the logic behind their decisions.

This decision had absolutely nothing to do with VAR. Is the right answer. VAR was, however, used to check a supplementary question "was there any cause to award a penalty?" and it concluded that there was none.

MOTD were pretty clueless really. Their's was the "howler". It ought to be obvious why once the referee blows his whistle play has stopped - VAR hasn't changed that. Since the ball went in the net after play had stopped whatever else it was, it was NOT A GOAL. This is basic stuff! Lineker & Co were certain the referee was mistaken in thinking Grealish dived - but gave no proper reason why. Jermaine Jenas said he couldn't have dived because he passed the ball - bizarre logic! If anything it shows it was a dive since Grealish was stable enough to pass the ball but apparently not to stay on his feet. There was no contact on Grealish in the box - no one touched him until he dived at Gary Cahill. There was possible contact from Zaha outside the box. But a free kick decision is NOT within the scope of VAR - so VAR could not have overturned the referee's decision not to give a free kick. It's possible that Villa should have got a free kick. But no one in the studio consider this and we didn't see any close ups to check if there was actually contact from Zaha. Most games have several controversial free kick decisions with barely a mention from the MOTD studio - these hysterics were so OTT. Tim Cahill said that the referee should have allowed play to continue. Is that a new rule that Tim C has invented? The infringement was by Villa player and there was clearly no advantage to Palace from allowing play to continue so why wouldn't a referee stop play? Apparently so that VAR can reverse his decision. That's not a rule that I am aware of - have I missed something ? So Villa may have cause to feel aggrieved that they didn't get a free kick in a very dangerous position - but nothing more than that. 1-0 Did Cahill actually say that? I only ask because I watched MoTD at 4am Sunday morning with a ferocious hangover and his monotone had made me switch off to his voice after the Man City discussion. Nothing wrong with taking reputation into account. In a perfect world all decisions are black and white and fact based. In real life there is a massive grey area. Originally posted by Teddy Eagle

Last night I had a somewhat heated contretemps with an A.Villa supporter whom I have known for a while. As soon as he came over to see me he was fervent in his claims that it was a "Shocking" decision blah, blah, blah and I disagreed in no uncertain terms and told him amongst other things to "Get off his high horse". He mentioned that all the pundits claimed that the referee had made a terrible decision and that they had played much more football than the pair of us, and my response to him was not one I would like to post on here.My dear wife "Caught in the crossfire" told me to calm down as I launched into a tirade with my tonsils leaving their moorings and steam coming out of my ears.I admit I was at my splenetic worst but calmness was restored after we switched the topic to VAR and there was no hard feelings between me and him. I have watched the highlights of the game a few times and have come to the view: Jack Grealish is always looking to deceive/trick referees (good player mind) but it’s clearly in his dna to be a bit deceitful, manipulative and that streak in him caused the goal to be disallowed.Just before he meets Cahill challenge he drops/drags his left foot (looking for a penalty) Ref saw it and blew his whistle Also..Luiz challenge (head/shoulder shove) on Just strange how the pundits have reacted ...infuriating really

Many people of Willo's 'vintage' will have parted company with their tonsils in childhood. Obviously he escaped the 'cut' that was more commonplace then than it is now.
