I'm so glad i'm not the only one on this forum who see's the quality he has. Me and my Dad sit there and can't believe we have such a tidy, gifted player sitting on the bench and we have Ayew running around like a headless chicken. When he comes on his link up play with Wilf is brilliant. I like Roy and believed we were finally being taken in the right direction with him at the helm but i'm with Rudi on this one, if he can't eventually fit our most technically gifted player into the first team then we need to find someone who can. Luka and Kouyate holding with Meyer in front, it really is that simple, it then allows Wilf to go back to the left wing as we have a suitable replacement in Meyer in the middle. Teams can't then just triple up on Wilf because we have someone creative elsewhere.

However, from what I've seen of him it isn't what he's most comfortable doing....he seems to prefer the 'Ray Wilkins' role. Hopefully he grows into the attacking mindset more....but I've got to be honest...I think Puncheon is better at it. Whatever on his wages he needs to be playing and we will see what happens. Again, that’s just not true. The fuss surrounded him came about precisely from his days as a number 10. I used to watch him quite a bit. He moved deeper because of the system the manager used. It was like Jorginho at Napoli and now Chelsea. It wasn’t specifically to take Meyer away from more attacking duties, it was to effectively implement the system he wanted to implement. Like I’ve said a few times. On the one occasion he played forward for us against Watford, he got an assist in the first 5 minutes. Trust me, it’s not a coincidence. He needs to be playing the advanced role or we will never see the best of him. A bit like Cabaye, only difference being, Meyer doesn’t have the attributes to be converted to a tenacious ball winning midfielder like Cabaye did. We cannot waste the talent of this guy. But as others have said, it seems like we’re heading down an all too familiar path.

Yup. And if Roy wants to play the 4 in defensive scenarios, he can take up the position mccarthur does and RLC did last season. I think the main problem is, though, more to do with the fact that Roy asked for a certain type of player. Scouting department saw Meyer playing deep, assumed automatically he was a defensive minded midfielder and bought him. Which, if true, is just so horrendously amateur it defies belief. I remember in a press conference when Meyer first signed, Roy talking about the likes of Kante & Torreira. So that’s probably an indication of the type of player Roy thought he was getting.

It can be similar to Roy’s beloved 4-4-2 in a way so there shouldn’t be too much holding Roy back, apart from being married to 4-4-2 AND wanting 0-0 until we fluke a chance or get the first chance or goal. That won’t last.

I don't see how anyone can conclude much about Meyer from last night. Working to get the ball in midfield he looks forward to see what he can create and there are five players in front of him - Schlupp, Ayew, Townsend, Sørloth and Puncheon - all turning in performances that are truly, truly s***e. WTF is he supposed to do? At one point he took a potshot from 35 yards rather than give any of them the ball to lose. Put him with Wilf and Luca.

I honestly think if Meyer had started in a few more games we would have a few more points on the board. It’s as plan as the nose on your face that he has an instant understanding with Zaha and this is where the creativity our midfield is lacking when he is not playing. I honestly don’t think our midfield works with Milo, McArthur and Kouyate all at the same time, we get bogged down we have missed Cabeye influence and leadership in our midfield since he left. Meyer can be a younger Cabeye in his own right given more game time. As we saw against Arshole he caused problems with his passing and had a few chances himself.

Played out of position out wide and totally ineffective. He has to play in the centre behind Sorloth with Zaha and Townsend out wide and two defensive players. I would prefer McArthur and Luca, although the latter needs to stop giving the ball away. Meyer should also take the free Kicks and corners instead of Luca.
Let's keep the ball this season! |

Agree but perhaps <insert name here> rather than Sorloth. He is clearly not suited to being a defensive mid in this league as he is nowhere near strong enough. Look at someone like Kante, also small in stature but he brushed Meyer off the ball with ease. The problem we have here is Roy doesn’t often deploy a real number 10 and any of those guys in that area are expected to be relatively tough in the tackle. We barely have a player on the books who can pick a pass, so in behind a striker would seem to be where he could do best, but Hodgson is struggling big time to make room for the guy which begs the obvious question, why on earth was he signed? I think the answer is that he was on a free, and had a big reputation. If he was truly a class act and suited to this league right off the bat, I have to assume a bigger club would have been in for him. Either way, I cannot believe this was a player who RH desperately wanted, as even accepting he didn’t have a pre season, Hodgson’s use of the player has been questionable and inconsistent at best.

I thought he was poor yesterday He made a limited impact and really looked to be tired when he was taken off. I believe he made his name at Schalke playing centrally and perhaps playing on the left doesn't suit his game. Looks to be a player who might be suited to a No 10 role, getting between the lines and providing passes for the strikers.

Agree with most said here, which begs the question, what are either Roy or Meyer doing here? Ideally Roy starts using Meyer effectively and we start to get some results, but will Roy do that?
