The Pixies: Dolittle

Spaceman 3: "Taking Drugs to make music to take Drugs to" (Northampton Demos).

Thee Hypnotics 'Liv'er than God'.

Dinosaur Jr 'You're Living all over me'

Pop Will Eat Itself 'Box Frenzy'.

Bauhaus 'Burning from the Inside'

Public Enemy 'It takes a nation of millions'

NWA 'Straight out of Compton'

The 80s wasn't a pivotal decade for guitar-based rock, but The Pixies kick-started the resurgence in the following one.

I think Surfa Rosa is their better 80s effort though.

Really? I thought the 80's was when Heavy Metal was at it's pinnacle?

Absolutely.

The NWOBHM and 'Hair' Metal was a large part of the Eighties for many.

If it were a choice of the bedroom or listening to crap faux soul/jazz funk and going out in Farahs the bedroom would win every time.

I dunno - I really think that metal by the later 80s had become a bit stagnant and trope ridden. Sure you had the rise of bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax etc who were doing 'new things'.

But there had been little in the way of innovation from the 70s and the days of Judas Priets and Iron Maiden (both of whom by the 80s close were a parody of themselves).

Sure, guitar wise there was a lot of talent in there - but f**k me the quality of a lot of the lyrics and compositions were repetitive and formulaic.

I think metal wise the 90s were a better era, with the rise of very innovative revisionist bands like Monster Magnet, Smashing Pumpkins, Kyuss, Primus as well as the more Nu-Metal bands like Lincoln Park, Green Day.

80s was hair metal horror shows, of guitarists who would spend 30 minutes 'guitar w*nking' out solos.
