There's actually a theory as to why we haven't heard from more advanced alien races; it's because they destroy themselves long before they get the chance to reach out beyond their own star system.

Well taken to that extreme everything is pointless. While we're here we should always aim to explore, in all directions.

There are many, many theories.

Most of which seek to address the Fermi Paradox (broadly: "life should be thriving in the universe, but we see no evidence of it"). Some, as you say, is self-annihilation. Some is based on a "great filter" that prevents progression of intelligent life at an earlier stage - we were one of the few to pass through that filter.

One of the more obvious ones is the incredibly short timescale over which humans have existed, relative to the age of the universe...

In fact stars like the Sun increase in luminosity at the rate of about 10% per billion years, so our lease will expire long before the Sun does.

Yep.....AI research and development is a much more likely and sooner mode of extinction. Not saying we should look to restrict it...as that is pointless but we need to get there first before those who would use it against us....and then create its antidote...It's the next item in the space race along with killer disease spread.....This is a joyful and optimistic isn't it? Yep.....AI research and development is a much more likely and sooner mode of extinction.

Not saying we should look to restrict it...as that is pointless but we need to get there first before those who would use it against us....and then create its antidote...It's the next item in the space race along with killer disease spread.....This is a joyful and optimistic isn't it?
