Black forest gateau does not deserve a mention in a mocking comment thank you very much.

I love the old BFG. Have you tried the Black Forest Gateau hot chocolate that Costa do around Christmas? If you've put something nicer in your mouth then I'm a Dutchman.

Oh nothing wrong with a gateau. Not tried the Costa one. Heard it wasn't very nice. Will give it a try in November time when it's in stores

Whoever told you it wasn't very nice is a knob.

Permit me to recommend that you have a dinner of black pudding, Black Forest gateau and have five or six pints of Guinness.

Your stools the following day will be darker than a black hole and heavier than an aircraft carrier.

That would be a fantastic idea if:

a) I liked black pudding
b) I wasn't teetotal
c) I was itching to see a black poo in my toilet

If you don't eat meat, you can load up on things like avocado because you aren't so critical on the fat count. It's better to eat foods high in nutrients - which meat isn't - than judging food solely on its fat content.

For example, while avocado has 3.1g of saturated fat per cup (basically a whole, small avocado), it's got no cholesterol and is chock full of fibre and other goodies. Bacon (as a breakfast food comparison) has 1.1g of saturated fat per slice - so it's easy to match the fat content from avocado in one sitting - and bacon is pretty much 0% for everything else except cholesterol and sodium.

It has some protein in it too.

It does, but so does avocado (2.9g per serving vs. bacon at 3g per serving), without the stuff that's horrible for you in bacon. Also, animal proteins are strongly linked to numerous cancers whereas vegetable proteins are not.

It's a fallacy that you need to eat meat to get protein. Where do you think the cow gets its protein from? Vegetables - especially anything that's dark in colour - are an excellent source of protein. And, again, because they aren't heavy with fat, sodium or cholesterol, you can eat a lot more veggies and so fulfill all your protein and all other nutrient needs without killing yourself in the process.

Well I'm not going to get involved in that one again, but I'm not disputing that avocado is better for you than bacon anyway. And I like the taste of both.

Of course, I love(d) bacon too. But knowledge is power and I think it's better to understand what you're doing when you eat bacon instead of thinking that you need it for protein.

I'm not going to misread what you mean there, but you clearly do appreciate that protein is needed. I wasn't trying to quote my own version of a GDA for protein intake at any point. Excessive protein intake as promoted by body building magazines sponsored by protein supplement companies just leads to a conversion to fat cells when it can't be fully utilised for muscle growth/maintenance anyway so I'm not going to argue the case for excessive protein intake. I'm just saying, a little bit of protein is a good thing, however you choose to source it. To say bacon is just sodium and cholesterol is not factually correct but it'd be obtuse of me to actually infer that that was what you meant.
