I have missed you Balls, with your knee jerk prejudices and all.

Tell me, what do you think about Corbyn and crew ditching their anti-EU principles and supporting the 'in' camp in the referendum, purely for political reasons?

How about asking on the Corbyn thread? This one's about IDS.

You can be sure his resignation is for his own political purposes rather than out of concern for the misery he and his department have caused over the last few years.

To be sure! He's just throwing his hat into Camp Boris which probably has a longer shelf life in politics.

Back to topic.......

I think this is getting very interesting.

Cameron is fighting dirty over the EU anti Brexit campaign and getting all sorts of people involved to besmirch the reputations of the Out campaign's leading lights.

Ros Altman was on the news this morning sticking the knife into IDS.

One thing's for sure, In or Out result in June's referendum - the Conservative Party is splitting and there will be a leadership contest before the year is out.

I believe there are two most likely reasons for IDS' resignation:

1. The EU referendum is a once in a lifetime opportunity for anti EU Conservatives to get their way on Europe. Cameron is disliked and largely despised by most people who identify themselves as conservative. IDS may well have looked to start a coup, with the view of installing a more Brexit friendly leader, i.e., Boris, before the referendum;
2. Say what you want about IDS but I believe that whilst he is ideologically to the right of the Tories he, unlike Osbourne, views that the benefits system should be used to get people into work rather than the source of cash Osbourne uses to facilitate cuts. IDS therefore resigned as he viewed Osbourbes cuts as ideologically against his views on how the benefits should operate.

However, I would say that there is a bit of 1. And 2. In his decision.

Now, you come across as the sort of privileged middle class psude, who likes to be viewed as 'progressive' (meaning you pay lip service to 'progressive' concepts, tut at those who disagree with your views and label them a 'phobe' of some sort) and would gladly sell out all the tradition and advantage this country offers its subjects in pursuit of being trendy. Therefore, if you would be so good as to answer my question, I would be much obliged.

Will remind you of this when you in future turn EVERY thread into one about immigration.

I agree with this assessment of IDS thinking pretty much.

As I said earlier, all these people lining up to discredit him are under Cameron's orders to do so IMHO.

IDS hasn't 'fallen in his sword'. He resigned over a matter of principles relating to the cuts in disability benefits (he didn't take responsibility for those cuts) or to further the Brexit cause, whichever you wish to chose.

'Falling on their sword' is when an individual takes responsibility for a group mistake.

Please remember that next time you are teaching in order that children can be taught correctly.

Humble pie just about to eaten by Matt as:

a) No reference was made by myself to 'fallen in his sword'
b) Falling on their sword also means to 'offer your resignation'. Link:http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/133350.html

Stop trying to score petty points on sideshow issues and points of order... just stick to facts and your genuine held beliefs/opinions.

Humble Pie isn't on the Menu Mr Teacher.... too much sugar!
