No serious stererophile would go within a million miles of a graphic equaliser. A piece of junk that distorts hi-fidelity; not improves it. Not taken seriously by any vinyl enthusiast (or, indeed, stereo enthusiast.)

Your question is impossible to answer without a budget but that notwithsanding:

Turntable; If you can afford it, get at least a second hand Linn LP5 Sondek, preferably Valhalla'd if not Lingoed (those are power supplies) with a Linn tonearm but a Rega RB300 if you're on a budget. Failing that, a Linn Basik or a Rega RP3 are top entry-level decks. If you're really on a very tight budget, look at a Pro-ject essential 2 (which I think you can get from Richer Sounds.)

Amp wise, the Naim Nait has no peer. In my view, nothing even close. The likes of Arcam and Mission/Cyrus are good alternatives but if you can afford Naim, get it. You should be able to find one on eBay and to some extent the older the model the better. Nait 1 and Nait 2 in good condition are dynamite.

There are a lot of speaker options but if you go with the above set-up, you could do worse than a pair of Linn Kans although recommendation would depend somewhat on the size of your listening space (do you want/can accomodate floorstanders, for instance.)

Lastly, don't bother with anything Japanese. In the main, it's mass market crap, not serious audio. When it comes to serious hi-fi, English and American manufactures are king. Also, Google Stereophile magazine and look at its annual "recommended components" list.

Do buy via eBay...or from second hand sources. Those who invest in decent audio gear tend to maintain it well and there are real bargains to be had (there are plenty of Hi Fi for Sale boards you can Google._ Even if you accumulate your set-up slowly, one component at a time you can end up with fantastic sound for a competitive price versus off-the-shelf JapanoJunk bought new. Then again the days of 8 tracks and vinyl were the days of "proper" music.
