Comedy often ages really badly. Take Hale and Pace for example. I know right, I used to work when it was on, so I had to record it and watch it the following day, by which point it was no longer funny... I love Tommy Cooper. There is just something about his whole 'anarchic' performance of 's**t magic and haphazard quick fire jokes', that is just pure magic. Him and Bob Monkhouse, were probably among the best of the old timer UK stand up solo comedy acts (Bernard Manning would be my third choice - Much maligned but very talented). I think as well he was one of those few comedians who could make a show look like it wasn't rehearsed at all and entirely improvised (and thus more personal - apparently he once did 52 shows in one week which is impressive in anyone's book). For someone who was actually a respected and talented magician, I don't think I've ever really seen him do a 'proper' magic trick, only his farce of magic tricks. He did proper magic plenty of times: he made the audience disappear.
I agree about Bernard Manning. 'It was a different age' as they say but his comic timing was unrivalled. Who are the best comics nowadays?

As for your question; I like all of the comedians that are Palace fans: from Ronnie Corbett through to Eddie Izzard and everyone in-between - which is not a sex-joke Ronnie and Eddie.

Losing your balls to cancer is funnier than Hale and Pace....

Jim Jefferies I rate quite highly (the TV Series Legit was great) - He's my kind of comedy. Doug Stanhope as well. I can't really get into nice comedy like Michael McIntyre and frankly Netflicks doesn't have much in the way of British Stand Ups. Chelsea Peralta and Amy Schumer surprised me (Funny and female), Lucy Porter used to be quite good as well. Jerry Sadowitz is the best comedian I ever saw live.

great tune by scroobius pip called tommy c about the big man. It's a great tribute to the man with lots of clips about him.
Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshipping. Hubert Reeves |

I was brought up on Tommy Cooper as my old man was a massive fan... He went to see him at the old Metropole nightclub in Purley, now a gym and said it was fantastic. I kind of had no choice but to watch him as a kid and I liked him but didn't think he was amazing.. I watched him on our black and white Tele the night he died on stage (that's literally died, not poor a poor comedy performance!!) I was also brought up on Dave Allen and Billy Connelly... Connelly I can take or leave but Dave Allen was a genius.. sitting on a stool, whisky in hand telling great stories... He was a brave man to... Being an Irish Catholic and slagging off the Catholic church could quite easily of got you murdered in the 60s and 70s but Allen still carried on.... Thinking about it didn't he get banned from Ireland or something silly like that??
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

I remember seeing Tommy Cooper in Catford in the 70s. They announced his name at the beginning and the spotlight went to the "Wings" - he didn't come on straight away as expected and the audience just broke into laughter !!!! When he came out he was carrying a miniture gate - more howls of laughter ! He put the gate down, opened it and just walked through - more laughter !!!! Genius. Finally, many years ago my wife and I were staying in a Cardiff hotel and as the "Bell Boy" was taking us to the suite he uttered words to the effect "Tommy Cooper has stayed in this suite". We felt very privileged.
